Margaret (Peggy) McDonough Connolly

Margaret (Peggy) McDonough Connolly passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her daughters on Friday, September 14th after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was one of 12 born in County Galway, Ireland and moved to Boston just under 60 years ago.

Peggy raised her 3 children, Joanne, Chrissy and Pat, in Dorchester. She moved to Quincy for a few years and ultimately landed in Braintree with her daughters and son-in-law. Peggy looked after her 3 grandchildren, Sara, Erin and Anna, who were her ultimate pride and joy.

Peggy was always full of life and was the person you wanted at your table at a party. She knew how to have a good time and you were always assured to have fun in her presence. Peggy loved her trips to Foxwoods to play slots and cherished her annual trips to Las Vegas with Chrissy. She made the trek to Disney World several times and enjoyed the magic with her granddaughters.  She treasured time with family when visiting Ireland almost every other year the last few years.

You could always count on Peggy to tell you like it is. If you looked “strong” up in a dictionary any one who knew her would not be surprised to see her name there – in lights. She was never afraid to voice her opinion or right a wrong.

Peggy was blessed with many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. A common theme remembered by all was her love of Christmas and Christmas lights. She was fortunate to remain very close to her siblings even though oceans separated some of them. Peggy could always be counted on to know the family news because she was diligent in keeping up with her weekly phone calls.

Peggy/Fred(dy)/Nana/Mom/Blondie will be sorely missed but memories of her will live forever. She is always in our hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Gregory’s Church, 2223 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, Monday, September 17th  at 10:00 AM. Patricia Marie (Flynn) Minichiello

MINICHIELLO, Patricia Marie (Flynn), 83, of Milton and Manomet, Massachusetts passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, September 13, 2018 in Buzzards Bay, MA from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Pat, as she was lovingly called by her friends and family, was the cherished wife and companion for sixty-one years to her devoted husband, Robert of Manomet.  She is also survived by her five adoring children and their families:  Marie (James) O’Neill, William (Dara) Minichiello, Laura (Tab) Warlitner, John (Kate) Minichiello and Julie (Stephen) Coote.  Pat was a doting grandmother to her twelve grandchildren, who called her Grammy –  Julianne O’Neill and her fiancé Drew DiBenedetto, Robert and James O’Neill, Brian Warlitner, Kara Daniels and her husband Josh, Kristen Warlitner, Ryan, John and Katelyn Minichiello, Julia Minichiello and Eaghan and Christian Coote. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Moynihan, two great grandchildren, Amelia and Madeline Daniels, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

The daughter of Martin and Nora Flynn, Pat was born on September 28, 1934 in Boston, MA and grew up in South Boston.  She met her future husband when she was 15 years old and they created a life devoted to each other, centered on their family and grounded in their Roman Catholic faith as loyal parishioners of Saint Agatha’s in Milton and Saint Bonaventure’s in Manomet.  After their marriage, Pat and Bob lived in Dorchester before moving to Milton in 1968 to raise their children, spending summers in Manomet for over 30 years before moving there permanently in 1997.

Pat was an amazing baker, cook and homemaker who doted on her family. She especially enjoyed holidays and one of her greatest joys was decorating her home and entertaining her friends and family.  Pat was a talented seamstress, making many of her own and her childrens’ clothes over the years and also was skilled in knitting, macramé and crochet. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do.  Her Catholic faith was strong, as a member of St. Agatha’s parish she taught Sunday School and sang in the St. Agatha’s adult choir for many years.  Pat was a dedicated mother to her five children and you could always find her on the sidelines of a baseball field, in a gym, on a court, attending a band concert, community or school event.  An avid walker, Pat spent many mornings walking around the sugar bowl at Castle Island with her friends. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Disney World which she visited 27 times with her husband.

She will always be remembered for her classic style, family values and infectious smile.  She was a friend to all and second mother to many, who made everyone she met feel welcome in her home and in her heart no matter who they were or where they came from. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Milton on Monday September 17, 2018 at 10:30 AM.  Relatives and friends invited.  Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, East Milton Square on Sunday, September 16th from 4:00 – 8:00PM.  Interment will follow the Mass at Milton Cemetery.

Dorothy May (Souther) Doherty

Dorothy May (Souther) Doherty. Retired nurse of Milton, died September 10, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Beloved wife of the late James N. Doherty of Milton. Loving mother of Barbara Gauld and her husband Ronald of Milton; James Doherty, Jr. and his wife Kelly of Atkinson, NH; Jennifer O’Toole and her husband Paul of Milton; Sean Doherty and his wife May of Charlotte, NC; Daniel Doherty and his wife Sara of Milton; and Julie Matthews and her husband Joseph of Milton. Cherished grandmother of RJ and Alex Gauld; Anna Doherty; Paul, Molly, Timmy, Seamus, and Jessie O’Toole; Merrill and Charlie Doherty; Owen Doherty; and Susie Matthews. Special aunt of Daniel and Casey Barron. Dottie is also survived by many close friends. Predeceased by her parents Daniel and Dorothy May (McDermott) Souther of Somerville, and her sister, Denise Barron of Milton.

Known to family and friends as Dottie, Dottie May, and the names she cherished most, Nani and Mom, she was reunited on September 10th with her husband Jim, whom she missed dearly after his death last November. We’re sad that we’ve lost her, but smile thinking of the two of them out on the town in heaven, free from ailments that sometimes slowed them down later in life.

Set up by friends, they had their first date in Somerville, where they both grew up. They were opposites who complemented each other. She was a boisterous, occasionally irreverent people person, where he was reserved and quiet. She liked meals out, his favorite was her homemade corned beef and cabbage. She liked the casino, he liked the car at the casino to quietly read the paper.

But they were an inseparable pair, and she devoted much of the last three years to taking care of him as his health declined. Raising and nurturing six children and twelve grandchildren helped prepare her for this, as did her prolific career as a nurse. She graduated from Catherine Labouré School of Nursing, where she made lifelong friends and started on a path that took her to jobs at Marian Manor, the U.S. Postal Service, Boston College, and Beth Israel Hospital (Milton and Needham).

Her professional success mattered little to her compared to the pride she felt – and shared with pretty much anyone she’d meet – about the activities and achievements of her children and grandchildren. She unapologetically heralded the latest graduation, promotion, school project, game, match, meet, or feis. It’s our turn to boast a little about her – she squeezed two lifetimes into one, and made us all richer with her wisdom, laughter, and love. Thank you Mom/Nani/Dottie May; we love you.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Joslin Diabetes Center or Labouré College (Milton).

Private burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. The Doherty family is planning a Celebration of Life Mass for 11am on Saturday, October 20 at St. Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton, MA 02186.

Alice M. (Sampson) Rutecki

Alice M. Rutecki

September 4, 1924 – September 3, 2018

Alice M. (Sampson) Rutecki, 93, of Milton, MA, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home after a long illness on September 3, 2018.

Alice was the youngest of a French-Canadian family of thirteen children born to Joseph Albert and Alvina (Boudreau) Sampson in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, a quaint fishing village nestled in the northeast corner of Cape Breton Island.  At the age of two, Alice immigrated with her family to Watertown, MA, and from K through Grade 8 she attended a grammar school where she spoke only French for the first half of the day and only English during the second half.  Alice graduated from Watertown High School in 1942 and then attended the Burdett Secretarial School in Boston from which she was graduated in 1944.  She became employed as a secretary for Westinghouse Electric Corporation’s Electric Service Division in Boston where she met an ambitious young electrical engineer, John E. Rutecki, to whom she was married in 1949 until his death in 2017.  Alice resided in Milton for sixty-nine years where she reveled in the raising of four children, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  She was a homemaker of extraordinary energy and talent who valued and took great pride in maintaining a loving, welcoming and nurturing home for the benefit and enjoyment of her entire family.  She was not only an endlessly devoted wife and dedicated mother but also a fabulous cook, an outstanding interior decorator, a talented seamstress who custom made all of her own curtains and wall treatments, a kind nurse to whoever in the family was sick, a tireless house cleaner, a perfect typist and strict editor of school reports and research projects, and a reliably available babysitter to three successive generations.  From her early youth Alice loved music and dance, and she became an accomplished pianist who loved to entertain family and friends by playing Broadway show tunes and a variety of pop music songs including her raucous rendition of the 1940’s classic “Boogie Woogie Rag.”  Alice laughed easily, frequently and infectiously, and her always pleasant and accommodating disposition was rarely displaced by even a trace of anger.  She was a devout and committed member of Jehovah’s Witnesses for the past forty-eight years, and she quietly set a shining spiritual example and inspiration for all in her every day activities.  Above all, Alice dreamed of a life full of family, love and selfless service to others, and she was most fortunate to have lived the life of her dreams to the fullest.  Alice was married to her loving and devoted late husband, John E. Rutecki, for sixty-eight years, and she is survived by her four children:  John E., Jr., of Mansfield, MA; Robert J. of Milton, MA;  James C. of Milton, MA;  and Marie A. Hawkins of Murrayville, GA.  She is also survived by ten grandchildren:  Rachel, David, Holly, Pamela, Tara, John Daniel, Kathleen, William, Andrew and Nathan as well as six great grandchildren: Ruby, Gavin, Colton, Blake, Elisa and Isla. Alice’s lifetime of love, devotion, service and sacrifice to her family and friends will forever endure in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her many relatives and friends who shall eternally love her as truly as she loved them all.

A graveside service open to the public will be conducted at the Milton Cemetery, 211 Centre Street, Milton, on Saturday, September 15, 2018, commencing at 10:30 A.M.  Please meet at the front entrance.  A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 374 Old Post Road, Sharon, MA, later that afternoon commencing at 1:30 P.M.

Jeannette Alexis

Jeannette Alexis, the first daughter of Clarice Dormeus, was born in Dame Marie, Haiti on March 18, 1935. Jeannette was an extraordinary and exceptional woman. She raised her seven children and her younger brother, Toussaint Dormeus, where she took great responsibility with meager means to make sure that they were raised with love and discipline.

Upon immigrating from Haiti, Jeannette spent a year in France and in 1989 took flight to the United States. With brief stints in Florida, she eventually settled in Boston, MA and resided with her late daughter Nicole, her husband and her grandchildren. She was an anchoring force in their and all of her family’s life. She was a self-sufficient woman, maintaining her home, supporting those in need, and sustaining an active social life with church members and friends who also became like extended family to her. She worked tirelessly to save funds for her only remaining child in Haiti to come to the United States and reap benefits of a better life. In 2011, she was sworn in as an American citizen, an honor she took great pride in and humorously referred to herself as “Mrs.Obama.”

She accepted Christ as her personal savior and was later baptized in France by her eldest son, Pastor Ernest Alexis. She was an active member of the Ebenezer Church of Boston led by her beloved Pastor Raoul Pierre. In her older years, Jeanette was experienced as a grandmother to all. She welcomed all young people as her own and took time to listen and meet them where they were. She was a woman of valor, caretaker, full of laughter and joy, and always fashionably dressed.

Jeannette fell ill of a massive stroke on April 1, 2017 and went to be with the Lord on August 20, 2018. She was preceded in death by her late son, Mason and late daughter, Nicole.

She leaves behind her brother, Toussaint Dormeus and family, her children – Marie Simone, Louis Ernest, Marie Madeleine, Jacqueline, late daughter Nicole, late son Mason, and Marie Guecheline; her grandchildren – Samuel, Emmanuelle, John, Michael, Jonathan, Lindsay, Ruthza, Jean Elie Jr., Emmanuel, Rachel, Daniel, Kenny, Noelani, Nathan and Jeremie, in addition to large number of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and in-laws.
