Joan B. Beyer

Joan B. Beyer, of Milton, age 71, November 13, 2018.

Beloved wife of Edmund Beyer. Devoted mother of James W. Beyer of Phoenix, AZ, Charles W. Beyer of Washingtonville, NY and Andrew B. Beyer of Pittsburgh, PA. Daughter of the late Charles and Dorothy Burton of Lakewood, NJ and sister of the late Susan Burton of Chilmark, MA. Joan leaves five grandchildren: Justin Brown, Ryan Brown and Haley Brown of Orlando, FL and Connor Beyer and Kylie Beyer of Washingtonville, NY. Her daughter-in-law Tanya Beyer, Jeff Bukowski, partner of her son Andrew, and her nephew Jesse Burton and his wife Laia Burton of Chilmark, MA. She also leaves behind her lifelong (67 years), great friend Nancy Finch of Philadelphia, PA.

Joan was born in Newark, NJ in 1947 and grew up in Plainfield, NJ.  A graduate of Plainfield High School and the Overlook Hospital School of Nursing, Joan dedicated her professional life to nursing for 49 years. She met her husband Ned in 1973 at the Deaconess Hospital in Boston and they were married in 1974. Ned and Joan bought a house in Milton in 1976 and have lived in the town for the past 42 years, recently moving to Home, Inc.  Joan was loved by her many friends for her warmth, caring, honesty and great sense of humor.

A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 17 at 10:00 am in Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE followed by a burial in Milton Cemetery.  Visiting hours at the funeral home Friday 3:30-7:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donation in Joan’s memory can be made to the Pine Street Inn, 444 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA 02118.

Mariette Napoleon

Mariette (Brunache) Napoleon, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2018.

Beloved wife of Pierre Armel Napoleon. Loving mother of Pierre and Jerry Napoleon. Grandmother of Javian and Dori Napoleon.

Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS, Friday, November 16 from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Matthew’s Church, Dorchester, Saturday, November 17 at 10am. Interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Gloria Niles

Gloria Willoughby Niles was born on July 2, 1940 in the city of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. She is the youngest of eight children born to Edward and Zulika Willoughby, now deceased. Gloria attended the Melville Memorial Girls school and the Progressive Educational Institute in Port of Spain. She married Ansyl Niles in 1961 and together they had five children. In 1970 she and Ansyl immigrated to the United States. They along with their five children eventually settled in Boston MA.

Soon after settling in Boston Gloria began working at Massachusetts General Hospital eventually training to be a Phlebotomist. She continued her career as a Phlebotomist specializing in working with cancer patients. Her professionalism and her devotion to her craft earned her several awards in recognition of her commitment to her patients. She remained at Mass General for over 40 years serving patients until her retirement in 2010.

She joined the Parish of All Saints Ashmont in Dorchester and remained a faithful member of the congregation serving in various roles. She was an usher and was on the original hospitality committee of the church. She raised funds for the church by organizing bus trips. She sang in the summer choir. She worked as a member of the altar guild, was a reader and served on the Vestry. She was also a senior warden for the church. After retirement she had more time to focus on her volunteer activities. She volunteered at the Epiphany School and continued her volunteer actives at the Pine Street Inn, The Greater Boston Food Bank and with veterans.

Gloria was a devoted mother and is survived by her five children Lana Niles, Donna Niles, Andy Niles, Sharon Niles and CherylAnn Matthews, her sisters Beryl “Gertrude” Richardson and Scarlet Williams, her step brother Junior Alexander, her nephews Derek Willoughby and Lionel Worrell and her nieces Cleona “Suzy” Scope and Ann Brumfield. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren Sharifah Niles Lane, Francis Niles, Taren Niles, Randall Matthews, Deaniah Malcolm, Deja Niles, Alfred Ansel Spencer, Taylor Matthews, Alexander Spencer, Aaron Spencer and Christopher Matthews, sons-in-law Roger “Butch” Matthews, and Dean “Leon” Malcolm, grandson-in-law Phillip Lane II, daughter-in-law Maria Eleina Gomez, grandnieces Charlene Willoughby and Dalanei Willoughby as well as five great grandsons and a host of other family and close friends.

Gloria’s family would like to express their sincere and heartfelt thanks to all who have supported them during this most difficult time.  Your prayers and acts of kindness have been a source of support and will remain with them always.

Tommie Lee Smith Jr.

Tommie Lee Smith Jr., of Boston, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2018.

Beloved son of Tommie Lee Smith Sr. and Daisy (White) Smith. Father of Kendrick Martin, Shenaya Martin-Johnson, Shellice Baker and Tameka Baker. Brother of Robert Smith, Darlene Smith, Geraldine Smith, Laura Williams, Tyrone Smith and Shawn Smith.

Visitation Saturday, November 17 at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS from 10-11am. The Funeral Service will begin at 11am. Interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Blair D. White

Blair Dalton White, 42, of Milton, passed away peacefully among friends early on Wednesday October 31, 2018.

Blair was the son of the late M. Dale and Ann (Sullivan) White. Grandson of the late Murray A. and Evelyn (Blair) Sullivan. Nephew of the late Peter Sullivan, all of Falmouth.  

 Blair was educated at Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree and St. Joseph’s College in Maine. He enjoyed his summers in Falmouth, becoming a lifeguard in his teenage years. After college, Blair worked as a schoolteacher and then transitioned into the restaurant business. He worked at many of Boston’s finest restaurants.

Blair had a beautiful soul and a huge heart. He opened his life to so many and had long-lasting friendships.  He is survived by his Uncle and Aunt Kevin and Lesley Sullivan and many friends who cherished him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his graveside service, Friday November,16th,  at 11 o’clock, in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, 167 East Falmouth Highway, East Falmouth, MA 02356.

Thomas F. Downes

Thomas F. Downes of Milton. Husband of 68 years to Maureen (Mullaly) Downes, died on Sunday, November 11, 2018.

Loving father of Mary Falwell and Warren of Chatham; Stephen and Ann (O’Hara) of Milton; Regis and Shelley (Murphy) of Weymouth; Michael and Catherine (Macdonald) of Easton; Lorraine and Hank McCartin of Providence, RI; Maureen and David Jeffery of Easton; Justine and James Murphy of Bridgewater; Richard of Milton; Tara and Walter O’Leary of Milton; Deirdre and Mark Morris of Edgartown; Moira of Milton. Beloved grandfather of 33 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Thomas was born in New York City, one of 10 children of Stephen and Margaret (Lynch) Downes.

He attended Syracuse University before enlisting in the US Army in 1943. He served with the Second Armored Division during WWII and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in Germany.  During his career, Thomas was Director of Warehousing for Stop & Shop; Vice President of Warehousing for Lechmere; Vice President of Warehousing and Transportation at Marshall’s, among other job titles.

Visiting hours Thursday from 4 – 8pm at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave, EAST MILTON SQUARE. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 16th at 10:30am in St. Agatha Church, 432 Adams St. Milton. Burial in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Albert A. Fitzgerald

Albert A. Fitzgerald, 97, of Milton, November 11, 2018.

Albert is the son of the late Edward J. Fitzgerald and Mary Jane (Murphy) Fitzgerald. Survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Evelyn (Garrity) Fitzgerald.  Proud father of Maryellen Benson and her husband Richard of Plymouth and Joan Traverse and her husband Paul of Milton.  Cherished grandfather of five grandchildren: John Fitzgerald Traverse (Jennifer), Elizabeth Traverse Fernald (Brian), Brian Benson (Jennifer), Michael Traverse, and Julie Fitzgerald Avergun (Edward).  Great grandfather of Isabella and Grace Fernald, Sophia and Andrew Benson, and Charlotte, David, James and Emily Avergun. Al was the youngest of seven children and is predeceased by the late Mary Carey, Edward J. Fitzgerald, John I. Fitzgerald, James A. Fitzgerald, Francis Fitzgerald and Joseph J. Fitzgerald. Survived by his brothers-in-law Paul Garrity and Francis “Red” Doyle, his sister-in-law Elizabeth Garrity and many nieces and nephews.

He is a proud WWII United States Army Air Corp Veteran. After serving his country, Al attended Boston College, graduating in the class of 1949. He became a CPA and worked for the Department of Defense for over thirty years.  Al enjoyed golf with his beloved friends, Friday afternoon races in Raynham, and was a fan of Boston College Football, the Red Sox, and the Patriots.

He enjoyed reminding all of his grandchildren: “Everything in moderation, nothing to excess, not even virtue.”  Al will be remembered by all who knew him for his patience, wonderful smile, and great wit.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Elizabeth Church, Reedsdale Road, Milton, Wednesday November 14 at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue EAST MILTON SQUARE, Wednesday 8:30-9:30 am. Interment Milton Cemetery.

Richard M. James W. Karalekas

James W. Karalekas of Homewood, IL and Milton, passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2018 at the age of 53.

Jim was the devoted son of Edwina Karalekas and the late George C. Karalekas.  He is survived by his dear friend Candy Nelis of Homewood, IL. Beloved brother of Charles and Sharon Karalekas of South Elgin, IL, Janet and Rich Poirier of Middleborough, Joanne and Kevin Kelly of Weymouth, Lisa Lynch of Plymouth, and Lee Ann Karalekas of Milton. Best friend and cousin of Peter C. Mourmouras and godfather of Mallory Mourmouras, both of Biddeford, ME. Jim was cherished by his many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.  Father of Michael Honrado.

Jim will be remembered for his larger than life personality, witty sense of humor, and his passionate and generous nature.  He was an avid Boston sports fan who enjoyed history and travelling.  Whether it was cooking for a family gathering in Harwich Port or weekends in Maine, Jim was happiest spending time with those he loved, especially his mom, Edwina.
