Mary (Doonan) Regan

March 30, 1932   –  February 23, 2019

Mary Regan died as she lived, surrounded by love. She was born in Boston to John and Catherine Doonan and lived in Milton her whole life. A couple of years after Mary was born, she was joined by her sister Pat which was fortunate as Pat became her best friend for life. Completing her family were her two beloved older brothers, John and Patrick (Sparky). She attended St. Gregory’s High School, Wyndham School, and Boston College Intown post high school. One fateful New Year’s Eve a dapper young man noticed a vivacious, beautiful brunette and thus started Mary and Murray’s 70-year love affair. Together they raised 6 kids. Their homes in Milton and Green Harbor, Marshfield were always open to family, friends, gaggles of kids of all ages and whoever else ‘the cat dragged in’. Delicious food, lots of laughs, and soulful nourishment were always on the menu.

Ever since she was a child, Mary loved the library. She ran for Library Trustee in 1992 and won in a landslide election much to her surprise, but nobody else’s who knew her. She served as Trustee until 2011 and was instrumental in the efforts to modernize and expand the Milton Public Library. Related to her passion for books and reading, Mary was an avid writer and published author. Much of her writing satirized the antics of her family in the Erma Bombeck style whose writings she thoroughly enjoyed.

Mary held many jobs as a secretary throughout her life and her most recent job was at Nichols and Pratt in Boston. Although she served as Administrative Assistant, her real role was bringing laughter, happiness, and a listening ear to her coworkers and they adored her for it.

Her family and friends thought Mary, who they referred to as the Mayor of Milton, might have known everyone in town. She had the unique ability to create a personal, genuine connection with every person she met. She always made time to share a kind word, a smile, or a chat. Her humor and wit enhanced planned gatherings and chance meetings. In her later years, she held court in Bruegger’s in East Milton meeting up with old friends and making new ones dispensing her brand of love and wisdom infused with humor.

Her fortunate children believe the role she most excelled in was that of Mother. To be seen, loved, and accepted for who you are and what you have to offer is a gift which she freely gave. Mary’s sister Pat’s family grew up in Milton too and the four Sullivan kids and Regans got the benefit of growing up with two Mothers, or ‘the Aunties’ as the kids call them. As her children grew and married, Mary delighted in her new in-laws and loved them dearly. Along came her 11 cherished grandchildren and she enjoyed nothing more than having the whole family together for celebrations and fun. Fun happened to be one of Mary’s specialties.

Mary leaves behind many friends, neighbors, and an incredibly grateful family: Her loving husband, J. Murray Regan of Milton, her best friend and sister Pat (Auntie) Sullivan of Milton, her children, their spouses and grandchildren children: J. Murray Regan III of Weymouth and Kathy Regan of Milton and their daughters Emily and Olivia, Lee Larkin of Needham her husband Bob and their daughters Elizabeth and Katy, John Regan of West Roxbury, Ellen Smith of Acton, her husband Aidan and their children Liam and Bronwyn, Beth Whitney of Hingham, her husband Kevin and their sons Brendan and Justin, Katie Kane of Sudbury, her husband Dave, and their children Caroline, Avery, and Andrew.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton, Friday March 1 at 10:00 am. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE Thursday 3-7 pm. Interment at Milton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary’s memory to Milton Library Foundation 501(c)(3) http://foundation.miltonlibrary.org/

Alice M. Zona

Alice M. Zona of East Sandwich, February 21, 2019, at age 98.

Alice grew up in Dorchester, where she met her late husband Pat while roller skating.  Alice was a war bride, as the couple married shortly after he enlisted to serve in WWII. When Pat returned from his overseas service, they relocated to the suburbs, residing longest in Braintree.  Summers were spent in Manomet with their three children.  Alice worked many years in retail sales, mostly at Kennedy’s in Braintree.  Her hobbies included making beautiful sweaters and afghans for her family.  She enjoyed baking and delighted in sharing her favorite desserts with family.  Alice and Pat settled in retirement in East Sandwich, where they made good friends and were surrounded by thoughtful and supportive neighbors.  In retirement, Alice’s long-time interest in house plants blossomed into a passion for outdoor gardening. Her children and their spouses were fortunate to spend lots of time with Alice and Pat, and to offer support as they enjoyed retirement at home.  Alice and Pat enjoyed a relationship of mutual love and devotion during their 70 years of marriage, and this was most evident in the care Alice provided her husband during his last years.  Alice brought determination and focus to everything she did, and her great strength and resilience helped her meet the health challenges that inevitably come with age.  Alice was feisty when needed, but she will be remembered and missed by all who knew her for her kindness and compassion.

Beloved wife of the late Pasquale J. Zona.  Devoted mother of Jacqueline P. Coffman and her husband Steven of NC, Joseph J. Zona and his wife Meredith of Arlington, and the late Lois A. Martin and her husband Clifford of Stow.  Known as Buppy to her grandchildren – Brian, Craig, Keith, David, Christopher, Brittany and Chelsea, and to her 7 great grandchildren.

Susan McTigue

Susan (Wilkins) McTigue, of Milton, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2019.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Hugh J. McTigue, and her loving son, Gregory H. McTigue. Susan is survived by her daughter, Gretchen  A. McTigue of Milton, and her granddaughter Phoebe Ann McTigue of Milton.  She also leaves her brother John “Jay” Wilkins and his wife, Lynn, of North Grafton, her brother Mark Wilkins and his wife, Nancy, of New Hartford, NY, her sister Virginia “Ginny” Donovan and her husband, Paul, of Milton, her sister Ann Carroll and her husband, Tom, of Marshfield as well as many special nieces and nephews.

Susan was raised in Braintree, where she was one of five children. She and her siblings shared an intense bond and have remained best friends, a closeness that recently provided Susan with an immeasurable amount of love and support.  Susan was a graduate of Fontbonne Academy as well as a proud and celebrated member of the Dorchester District Court Family for over 30 years.

Susan was quick with a laugh, generous with her smiles and always willing to lend an ear.  These traits made her a legend in the Judge’s Lobby at Dorchester Court and a cherished friend.  Her natural maternal way made her a “mother” to so many, a role she happily embraced.  Motherhood was her calling and she did it so well, but grandmother-hood brought her the most joy.  Her love for Phoebe was infinite; her pride and adoration were palpable and it was mutual.  The void Susan’s death has left is wide and deep, but her spirit will live on in all her friends and family, especially in her granddaughter, Phoebe.

Michael Horne

Michael Horne of Dorchester died on January 19, 2019, a day after his 76th birthday. He was born and raised in Gulfport, Mississippi and attended the University of Mississippi, where he met his wife, Carole.  After receiving his B.S. in 1965, he studied at Boston University with Abner Shimony, where he completed his Ph.D. in Physics in 1970.

That fall he joined the faculty of Stonehill College where he taught until his death. He loved teaching, especially courses for non-Physics majors. One such course was Quantum Mechanics and Relativity, where he took joy in revealing the beauty and simplicity of physics to this broader community. When he received Stonehill’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 2001, the title of his address to the College was “Quantum Mechanics for Everyone.”

From his dissertation on, he was interested in the foundations of physics, especially of quantum mechanics. He first became known for his work in developing the CHSH (Clauser, Horne, Shimony,  Holt) Inequality,  an empirically testable form of a theorem by the Scottish physicist, John Bell.  Bell’s work countered arguments by Albert Einstein and others that “hidden variables” were required to explain the apparently strange predictions of quantum mechanics.  Throughout his career he collaborated with leading physicists in America and Europe–especially at Boston University, M.I.T (in Clifford Shull’s lab), CCNY (with Daniel Greenberger), and the University of Vienna (with Anton Zeilinger)– exploring the mysteries of quantum entanglement and challenging Einstein’s contention that what happens to one object could not be linked with what happens to another object at a distance. The term GHZ (Greenberger, Horne, Zeilinger) is now a standard designation for the fundamental entangled state of three quantum particles that is often cited in quantum mechanics textbooks. This research was described in the widely-praised book, The Age of Entanglement: When Quantum Physics Was Reborn by Louisa Gilder.

Mike had a lifelong passion for music, especially jazz, and from his high school days he played jazz drums. He also loved cooking, movies, especially classic movies, and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Carole Horne, his sister Miriam Northrop of Memphis; his brother-in-law Paul Robinson, the widower of his sister Patsy Robinson, of Culman, AL; his sisters and brother-in-law Lynda (Hank) Thompson of Birmingham; Jennifer McKeown (Alice Defler); Larry McKeown (Paula Bright); Kate McKeown (Michael Bills), all of Boulder, CO; along with many nieces and nephews. There will be a private gathering at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to The Jazz Foundation of America’s program, The Cause, helping jazz musicians in need of services:  https://jazzfoundation.org/the-cause/.
