John A. “Jack” Shaw Jr, 75, of Quincy died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 26, 2015.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (Hayward) Shaw.  Jack is survived by his loving children, John A. Shaw III and his wife Julie of Braintree, Mary Shaw Vassalli of Weymouth and Billy H. Shaw of Quincy.  He is also survived by his caring sister Maryellen Sullivan of Milton, his cherished grandchildren Nicholas and Samantha Vassalli, Jack, Madeline, and the late Connor Shaw, as well as his companion Barbara Roy of Dorchester.  Jack was an avid boater and life member of Savin Hill Yacht Club, a proud Navy veteran and a retired union electrician of  IBEW Local 103.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton, Tuesday, March 3, at 10:30 am.  Relatives and friends kindly invited.  Visiting hours will be held at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON, from 4-8 PM on Monday, March 2.  Interment Milton Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers a donation in Jack’s name may be made to the American Stroke Association, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231. 

Muriel Graves of Braintree passed away on February 22, at the age of 93.  She was born in Everett, MA and was the daughter of Everett and Marie Bellemore Graves.  Muriel retired in l984, after a lengthy career as a bookkeeper. She was fluent in ASL and took delight in teaching others who took an interest in learning sign language.   Muriel moved from the greater Boston area to Milton where she spent several years working as a volunteer at Milton Hospital.

Muriel was known for her deep love of dogs and animals and for her concern for the welfare of the disenfranchised.  She was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed music, golfing, ice skating, the seashore and traveling.  Muriel cherished her retirement years through the relationships she had with her church, community and friends at Winter Valley in Milton.

Muriel is predeceased by her parents, brother Coburn, sister in-law Marie, cousin Myrtle and companion Joe.  She is survived by several nieces and nephews and a grandnephew and grandniece.

Celebration of Muriel’s life and internment will be at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and Memorial Garden of Seasons, in Milton at a later date in the Spring.  The family would like to thank Muriel’s steadfast friends, St. Michael’s pastoral staff and parishioners and her many caregivers and professionals for their devoted care in her final years.   Arrangements are being made through Dolan and Chapman Funeral and Cremation Services in Milton.  In lieu of flowers Muriel requested that memorial donations be made in support of an animal welfare organization of your choice.

Pamela M. (Dubzinski) Bent, 71, of Milton Massachusetts, died on Thursday, February 19, 2015 with her loving family at her side.  Pam was born on July 23, 1943 in Gardner, Massachusetts and was the beloved daughter of the late Walter and Ruth (O’Hearn) Dubzinski. Pam was raised in Gardner and was a graduate of Gardner High School, Class of 1961. She also graduated from Regis College, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She later graduated from Boston College with a Master of Arts degree in English and from Simmons College with a Master of Arts degree in Library Science.

 Pam worked many years as a teacher and school librarian in the school systems of Rockland, Weymouth, Brockton, Boston, and Gardner. She retired from the Gardner Middle School as a school librarian in 2004.

 In addition to her parents, Pam is predeceased by her husband of nearly 36 years, C. Frederick Bent, who died in February of 2006.  Pam is survived by her loving and devoted children, Jonathan M. Bent of Milton and Courtney B. Winter and her husband Anthony of Boston.  A source of continued wonder and love were her beloved grandchildren, Annie, Julia, Jack, and Luke Winter. In addition she leaves her loving siblings, Walter J. Dubzinski, Jr., and his wife Irene of Gardner, John Dubzinski and his wife Donna of Leominster, and Anne Jasinski and her husband John of Templeton. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Pam will always be remembered for her unfailing love and devotion to her family, in particular, to her children who were the center of her world. She was a doting and involved grandmother, a steadfast caregiver to her beloved parents in their later years and a loyal and kind sister, aunt, and friend. Her presence will forever be missed and her memory will remain in our hearts forever.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 28 at 11:00 in Holy Spirit Church, 50 Lovewell Street, Gardner. Burial will be at a later date. Calling hours have been omitted.

Evelyn (Vaughan) Butler of Dorchester, passed away peacefully early Monday morning February 23^rd, 2015 surrounded by her loving family in her home at the age of 88.  Born on May 5, 1926 in Dorchester; daughter of the late Maurice and Mary T. (Fitzpatrick) Vaughan, Evelyn was raised in Neponset section of Dorchester and has been a lifelong resident while spending the summers in Humarock for the past 51 years.  Family was the single most important aspect of Evelyn’s Life. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. The grandchildren were her world and she loved being part of their lives and watching them grow. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting and making sweaters for all the grandchildren.  Beloved wife of the late (Ret.) Boston Police Detective Edward P. Butler.  Evelyn is survived by her devoted & loving children Edward J. “Buddy” Butler and his wife Patricia of Hingham, Boston Police Officer Michael V. Butler and his wife Joan of Norfolk, Stephen M. Butler and his wife Elizabeth of Dorchester, Jeanne M. Dalton and her husband John of Neponset, and Judith A. “Judy” Butler of Dorchester, her dear sisters Anna M. Olive Julia (Murphy) Rull, formerly of Milton, Quincy and South Boston at the age of 105, in Hingham, MA, Sunday, February 22, 2015.  Wife of the late William L. Rull, Sr., who died in 1967  when she was 56 years old and she never
remarried.  Devoted mother of  Myrtle T. Kelly of Norwell, MA ,  the late William L. Rull, Jr. and the late Robert F. Rull.  Also survived by three grandchildren, Joseph Kelly and his wife Lisa of Putnam, CT,  William Kelly and his wife Neida of Plymouth, MA and Kyle Kelly of Rockland, MA. Mary E. Sughrue, 78, of NYC, died peacefully on February 20.  Mary was from a family of five children raised in Milton, Mass.  She is survived by her loving brothers,  Rev. Paul Sughrue, of Acton, Mass. and Peter Sughrue of Bridgehampton, NY,  and by her adoring sister, Ginny Crowley of Kennebunk, Me.  She was predeceased by her brother, Steven.  “Aunt Mimi”, as she was known to many, is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, and sixteen grand nieces and grand nephews. Mary was loved by all for her constant support, her great generosity, and her eternal optimism. She relished her role of being a loving aunt and a dear friend to all.

Mary graduated from Simmons College in 1957.  She spent ten years employed at Harvard Business School, before venturing to New York City.  There she worked at the Frick Museum and for the Rockefeller family, before becoming involved in public policy under the umbrella of New York State.  Mary spent over 25 years working as a Special Assistant in the office of NYS Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.  In her retirement, Mary was a devotee of the Metropolitan Opera and a member of the Harvard Club of NY.

John Eldridge Garland, 60, of Milton, a man of endless generosity, intense passion and a wit that lightened life’s most trying challenges, passed Feb. 21.
As vice president of M.S. Walker’s fine wine division, he lived by the words,”Life is too short for bad wine.” For John, who tasted the best wine of five continents over his career, life was also too short to complain, too short to worry, too short  not to travel, too short not to.forgive….too short not to. love….. A life cannot be too short  when every moment is lived in the true sense of the word lived with enthusiasm, compassion and grace.
John loved history, music, gardening, the Patriots; he loved Paris, tailored suits, Italian ties, and his two dogs, Penny and Roscoe.
Those who knew him will most remember the way he loved those closest to him, his family and his friends – with loyalty and fidelity and devotion. They will remember his love for his wife Clare, to whom he was blissfully married for 34 years; his three children, Matthew Owen, Ryan Eldridge, and John Harrison, to whom he devoted himself completely; his late father, Eldridge “Al” Garland and his mother, Sheila Garland of Florida, who raised him with the integrity he lived by; his sisters, Nancy Garland of North Carolina and Susan Garland of Florida, to whom he was the best older brother anyone could ask for; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends to whom his door was always wide open.
John was born in Cambridge, England, and raised in Brookline, Mass.  After graduating from Brookline High School he attended the University of New Mexico before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force.  After completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Massachusetts he began his career in the wine industry at M.S. Walker in Somerville, where he worked for 30 years.
No one would call him a man of few words, but he was the rare case of a loquacious man who preferred to lead with his actions. As anyone who ate or drank with him could attest, John Garland could talk the talk, but those who truly knew him will tell you how he walked the walk, deliberately and with style. If there is one lesson he would like to leave those of us still running in the human race it would undoubtedly be, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” 

We promise we won’t.
