John J. Gorman

Gorman_Johnweb

John J. Gorman of Chatham, formerly of Randolph and Jamaica Plain, died Aug. 5, in Boston, MA.

John was a loving and devoted husband, son, father, brother and friend.  John was a voracious reader and Pats fan.  John believed strongly in education and worked hard to pursue his own and encourage his children’s educational pursuits.   John loved to laugh, discuss and argue about politics, and, despite growing up in Boston John was one of the few Republican party members in Massachusetts, much to his children’s chagrin.  If Hilary Clinton fails to be elected, we will know that John had a hand.  His children all agree he was the funniest man that they knew.

John grew up in Jamaica Plain and graduated from Boston College.  He had a long and varied career centered on teaching.  After graduating from BC, John started work teaching Physics at Boston Technical High School.  He then worked as a planner for the Boston School Department, which spurred him to move his family to Randolph.  While continuing to work full time John studied to obtain his PhD in Education from BC in 1978.  This enabled him to secure a role in Mansfield as the Assistant Superintendent, before taking a role with what is now Lockheed Martin as a trainer for the Apache helicopter systems.  This took him to Daytona Beach, where Pat soon joined him and which made Daytona far more pleasurable for John. For John, living in Daytona could only be seen as doing time, but it spurred John and Pat to take jobs overseas, first in Turkey, where their real adventures began.  John and Pat lived and taught in Pendik for three years, just outside Istanbul, and enjoyed bartering for coca cola, learning the Turkish language, and visiting the multitude of wondrous historical sites across Turkey.  They then moved to Rome, where they taught at the Marymount school and thoroughly enjoyed Roman life: the cuisine, 9000 pizzas, traveling, and trying out their Italian.    After Rome, they retired to Chatham where John, despite being a city kid at heart, came to enjoy the Cape.

John had many physical challenges over the last years of his life which he bore without complaint, and with the tremendous support of his wife, sisters, and children who love him dearly.

Beloved husband of Patricia Caswell. Devoted father of Maire Gorman and her husband Ken Carpenter of Jamaica Plain, Jeanne Gorman of London, UK, and Maureen Gorman of Hyde Park. Brother of Mary and Anne Gorman both of Plymouth. Step Father of Marc Alger of Brockton, Toby Alger of NC, and Jeremy Alger of W. Bridgewater. Also survived by 3 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Sat. , Aug. 8, at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Milton at 9o’clock. Visiting Hours in the Dolan & Chapman Funeral Home, 5 Canton Ave., MILTON VILLAGE, Fri.,  4 – 7 pm. Interment New Calvary Cemetery, Boston.

If desired contributions in John ‘s name may be sent to, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Boston, 51 Sleeper Street,  Boston, MA 02210.
