Donald Lee Preston

Donald Lee Preston was born June 13th, 1947 to Kenneth Lee Preston and Evelyn Crawford in Clover, SC. He is the eldest of two estranged siblings, Kathy Thomas and Reginald Crawford.

Donald began his education in South Carolina, but finished his studies within the Boston Public Schools. Soon after high school he began driving Cabs. This is where he met his best friend for 46 long years, George C. O’Neal Jr. George, affectionately known as Jr, would sometimes have his sister Barbara Ann riding along with him. Donald, affectionately known as Preston, asked who she was. She then became the love of his life and Jr had gained “a brother from another Mother.”

On March 14th, 1979 Preston gained employment with the City of Boston in the Department of Public Works. In August of 1983 he and Barbara Ann were blessed with their daughter, Shaneka Nicole O’Neal. He was a devoted loving father who was always very proud of his “Little One.” He never missed a violin recital, award/trophy ceremony, nor graduation. He always showed up and made his presence known. There was never a question of his love and commitment as a Father. When times turned rough due to Barbara’s struggle with drug addiction he didn’t buckle, fold, nor abandon his family. His focus remained the same, and by the Grace of GOD they were able to see Barbara beat her addiction in 1997.

On March 23rd, 2000 Preston and Shaneka were left to mourn the sudden passing of Barbara Ann. He wasn’t sure he’d ever find love again, but he did. From this union he gained a step-daughter Djenaba Williams Jr, affectionately known as DJ. Life continued on with further blessings. Preston became a grandfather who loved spending time with his grandchildren, Daryl and little Barbara, who love their “Papa” very much. Preston loved his family unconditionally. He also loved his Cadillac’s. He started with a 1992 Sedan Deville which was white with a blue top. However, the 1998 Sedan Deville which was green with a tan top was his favorite by far. He’d spend his free time washing, waxing and buffing that car. He kept his ride looking pretty spiffy with White Walled tires.

Preston was later challenged with Dementia Alzheimer’s. During this time, it was evident he required further assistance. Without hesitation Shaneka stepped in as his Caretaker and made sure that same love and devotion was reciprocated as deserved. As he battled internally, she battled externally as his voice and biggest Advocate. His diagnosis was not going to define him as a Father, nor human being. He enjoyed several outings and random road trips with his family. Not to mention numerous parties and BBQ’s with Jr & Diane as their oldies play in the background creating memories that we’ll cherish forever.

On October 27th, 2020 Preston’s battle with Dementia Alzheimer’s came to an end. He was surrounded by those dearest to him as his soul departed for Eternal Paradise.

Preston leaves behind to mourn, his daughter Shaneka Nicole O’Neal of Brookline, MA. Grandchildren, Daryl Preston Killebrew III, and Barbara Ann O’Neal also of Brookline, MA. Best friend and confidant of 46 years, George Curtis O’Neal Jr & his wife Diane of Boston, MA. A host of family and friends near and far. As we are gathered here reflecting on his life, his Spirit is present as he smiles down upon us knowing he’s forever loved and never forgotten.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visitation on Thursday November 12, 2020 at 10:00-11:00am in the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, Dorchester Lower Mills.  A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00am in the Dolan Funeral Home.  Interment is Private.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Preston’s memory to MIND, MGH Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease. Thank you.

Mary, a loving mother, wife, grandmother, relative, friend, teacher, volunteer and life-long Massachusetts resident, made her mark on the world through loving kindness to family, friends, and the many people she knew and lives she touched.  Mary and her family lived in in the Milton area from 1962 until retiring to North Falmouth (Megansett) in 2000.  Since childhood, she enjoyed visiting Cape Cod.  Mary and her family spent summers in Megansett on Cape Cod beginning in 1969.  Mary’s passion for life and service to others was evident in her dedication to and leadership in volunteer pursuits over the years.  She was a daily communicant and active volunteer at Saint Agatha’s Church in Milton and Saint Elizabeth Seton Church in North Falmouth.  At Saint Agatha she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Boy Scout Adult Leader and an active volunteer in other areas.  From 1984 until she retired, Mary hosted a very successful Sunday Brunch benefiting Francis House, a Boston MA homeless shelter.

Tammy Coleman

Tammy Coleman, age 59, passed away at Brigham’s and Women’s Hospital Thursday October 29, 2020.  She was born March 27, 1961 in Ensley, Alabama to Leadell and Clarissa Coleman.

Tammy moved to the Boston area in August 1963 with her family.  She remained here throughout her life.  She attended Boston Public schools and graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1979. Tammy attended Brandeis University briefly, and furthered her education at Cambridge College by earning her Bachelor of Arts in 2015.

Tammy was a caring, loving person and it showed in how she cared for her children and the people around her.  It also showed in her profession. She worked extensively in the healthcare field where she took care of people that were unable to take care of themselves. She thought it was important to treat people like she wanted to be treated and it showed in how she cared for her patients.

Tammy was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, and friend.  As Tammy’s children were growing up, she made sure her children had a variety of experiences. Her children wanted to ensure their mother was able to receive the same from them and they took her on a trip to London, England where she was able to experience another culture and time abroad.  She was a caring, helpful, and problem-solver to her mom.  Her mother could count on her to help solve problems like set up her cell phone and sending text messages, and every night at 11:30 Tammy would remind her mom to take her medication.  Tammy’s sisters found her to be funny, a good listener, and very supportive. She was there when you needed her. Tammy’s friends found her to be a true, die hard friend.  If you were Tammy’s friend you did not have to question her loyalty and she knew how to keep your innermost secrets.

Tammy was also very creative and enjoyed writing poems and short stories. And, just like her dad, she enjoyed taking pictures and cooking. She could make a mean lasagna.  She also enjoyed celebrating birthdays and holidays with family and friends.  Tammy will be truly missed.

Maureen A. (Hurley) Ryan

Maureen A. (Hurley) Ryan of Milton died in Boston Tuesday October 27, 2020.

She was the daughter of the late John M. and Alice (Berkeley) Hurley. Maureen was the wife of William A. Ryan, Jr. of Milton for 51 years. She was the loving mother of their two children, C. Melissa Ryan of Quincy and William A. Ryan of  Palos Verdes, CA. Maureen was also the devoted mother-in-law of Gabriela Evia Ryan and the loving grandmother of Daniel and Liliana Ryan, all of Palos Verdes. She was the sister of four brothers, John M. Hurley, Jr. and his wife, Anne Goggin, of Brewster, Kevin P. Hurley and his wife, Susan, of Concord, and Mark F. Hurley and his wife, Marianne, of Mancos, CO. Maureen was predeceased by her brother Brian D. Hurley, late of Natick. Maureen was the sister-in-law of Claire Ryan Hickey and her husband, James, of West Roxbury, John J. Ryan (deceased) and his wife, Mary, of Mashpee, Robert J. Ryan and his wife, Christine, of Quincy, and Paul C. Ryan and his wife, Francine, of Northborough. She was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews and was celebrated by many of them as she was often known to bring gifts on holiday occasions long after a cessation of such gift-giving had been agreed upon (“Look want Santa left for you at my house!”).

Maureen attended Needham schools and graduated from Aquinas Junior College. She worked in the International Division of Polaroid Corporation before her marriage and the birth of her children. After her own children were grown, Maureen worked as a teaching assistant at Thacher Montessori School in Milton. She always regarded her approximately ten years at Thacher as among the most fulfilling of her life.

To know Maureen was to know the abiding friendships she enjoyed with especially dear friends and family. Despite an aversion to air travel, Maureen made multiple trips to the California coast to spend time with her beloved grandchildren. For many years, she enjoyed weekends and summer vacations at West Dennis on Cape Cod (with the highlights of those vacations being visits by the grandchildren). She gained fame among her family for the monster lobster rolls she prepared on special occasions. Countless friends regarded her as a welcoming and thoughtful listener who frequently provided sensitive, perceptive advice – especially in the sunroom at West Dennis.

Maureen carried on admirably and courageously for eight years following a lymphoma diagnosis. She was profoundly grateful to Drs. James Levine and Matthew Weinstock of Beth Israel Hospital-Boston, and their staff, for their professional insights in her care and treatment. Maureen was always eager to contribute to causes supported by family and friends. In that spirit, if inclined to make a donation in Maureen’s memory, please consider a charity of your choice.

Funeral service and committal are private due to pandemic conditions.
