Peter Tarnoff

Peter Tarnoff, of Osterville, MA passed away the morning of March 29, 2018 at age 68.

He lived a vibrant life and waved the white flag reluctantly. He had so many avocations in which he was fluent that one friend commented that he lived every day as if it were it was his last, but studied his interests as though he would live forever. He loved Cape Cod, his final home, but began his life in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Peter attended St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Connecticut; he then went on to St. Lawrence University for two years before transferring to Boston University. There, while studying journalism, he nurtured his loves of photography and music. He was the first photo editor of the newly formed campus daily newspaper, The Daily Free Press, still in publication 48 years later. Peter loved music and he befriended musicians and music promoters alike in Boston, as he was much more than a casual fan. Latter day collectors of rock and roll images prized his music photos made beginning in the 1960s.

After college, Peter began a diverse career – working only in industries that he loved, including alpine skiing, wine, finance, and lastly education. It was not a surprise to his friends that Peter, as a legendary storyteller and unusually patient explainer of complexities, spent the remainder of his working life as an educator. He taught math and financial literacy at numerous schools on Cape Cod and in the Boston area.

Peter married Donna Driscoll-Tarnoff on April 25th 1981, in Milton, Massachusetts. Peter and Donna met in 1979 in Connecticut, while both working in the ski industry. They enjoyed 31 years of marriage, skiing in Vermont, traveling in France and Italy, and raising their two sons Nicholas (31) and Alexander (28), until her passing in 2012.

Peter was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Donna Driscoll, his father, Edwin Tarnoff, and his brother, Jeffrey Tarnoff. He was exceptionally proud of his two sons Nicholas, of Atlanta, GA, and his wife Chelsea, and Alexander, of New York, NY. He is survived by his mother, Betty Tarnoff, sons Nicholas and Alexander, and many nieces and nephews and large extended family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His friends have assured the family that they will fill the void of his absence with memories and stories too many to number.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday April 3, 4:00pm- 7:00pm in the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, Milton. Interment Private.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Peter Tarnoff to the Admiral’s Watch of the Barnstable Clean Water Coalition or to Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, Class of 1979 Fund.

Naomi James

Naomi James

April 2nd 1934 – March 22nd 2018

Boston, MA

Naomi James was born on April 2, 1934 one of ten children in the small village of Layou in Dominica, West Indies. At eight years old her father died after which she was sent to live with an elderly aunt in Marigot another small village not too far away from her mother and other siblings.  At the age of 15, she ran away from home and eventually made her way to the Roseau the capital of Dominica, where she met Harry Elwin for whom she had three children- Rosamund, Eleanor and Gregory Elwin. Naomi was a strong willed, humble, hardworking, determined and fiercely independent woman. She had a sense of innocence about her which came through by her youthful giggle and laughter. She had a sense of style and loved the colour red. In her younger years, Naomi was an avid reader of romance novels and women s’ magazines. She loved the cinema, where she learned the songs she hummed or sang everyday for over sixty years.

Naomi arrived in Boston, forty years ago thanks to a family member who sponsored by family after a major hurricane in 1979.  Once here, Naomi demonstrated her tenacity and determination to set roots and foundation in her new home country. Like many immigrants, Naomi had dreams of having her own house and home. As a live in Housekeeper working for less than minimum age, no banking institution was willing to give her a mortgage.  However, that did not stop or deter Naomi. She canvassed local shop keepers in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood where she lived and shopped for her employer, telling them her story and convinced them to sign letters of support and recommendation to give to the bank. With pride and determination, she approached her employer and convinced him to co-sign her mortgage loan. Finally, she achieved her goal and became a homeowner.

Naomi became a member of Old West Methodist Church in 1986 , where she remained an active member until her death.  She had many friends in the congregation and her granddaughter Samantha was the first to be baptized there after a fifty year hiatus! Naomi leaves behind six grandchildren; Darvon and Samantha in the United States, Aziza and Tarik in Canada and Naomi and Makaya in France.  She also leaves behind 10 great- grandchildren many of whom have had the privilege of knowing her and have memories of their Gigi to hold on to..

Our family is thankful for all the years of love, friendship and support we received from Naomi, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  She will be deeply missed.

Family and friends are invited to Attend Visitation on Friday April 13, 2018 10:00am- 12:00PM in the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington St. Dorchester.  A Funeral Home Service will follow at 12:00PM.  Interment in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston.

Charles J. Collova

Charles J. Collova, 91, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Wednesday March 28, 2018 at the Mennonite Home.

He was the husband of Camilla (Corey) Collova, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage this past June 11th. Born in Boston, MA, Charlie was the son of the late Santo and Lena (Yetto) Collova.

Charlie was a US Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He was a graduate of St. Michael’s College in Burlington, VT and earned his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Charlie had worked as an account executive for various advertising agencies in the Boston area from the mid 1950s until 1965. He then became the marketing vice president for a mutual fund company in Washington D.C. in 1969. In 1982, Charlie became an IRA consultant to credit unions, which he continued to do until retiring in the mid 1980s.

Moving to Lancaster in 1995, he was a long-time member and supporter of the YMCA, especially programs for disadvantaged children. He was an avid believer in vigorous daily exercise, always pushing to lift a heavier weight or walk the treadmill for 10 more minutes. He was an adventurous and accomplished cook and welcomed even casual visitors with an offer of food. To his surprise, later in life he developed a love for animals after being adopted by a stray cat.

He enjoyed talking with young people, urging them to continue their education and praising their ambitions. He considered obtaining his MBA while working full-time to be his proudest achievement and he believed it was never too late to learn something new, if batteries weren’t required.

In addition to his wife, Charlie is survived by his children: Stephanie married to Gain Bunten, Jennifer Collova and Jay Collova; his grandchildren Alix Bunten, Jared married to Ashling Bunten, and Sofia Collova and his great-grandchild Shaylyn Bunten. Kenneth A. Stevens

Papa – known for his handiwork

Stevens, Kenneth A., aged 90, was born in Milton, raised in Dorchester, and made his home in Milton for 65 years.

He served in the Coast Guard in World War II. He passed away peacefully on March 24 surrounded by family. Beloved husband of Barbara A. (Lord) Stevens. Son of the late Aston and Agnes Stevens. Devoted father of Karen Brazell and her husband Daniel of FL, Joanne Lane and her husband Patrick of VA, Lynne Lawless and her late husband Mark of Westwood, Susan Newman and her husband James of Walpole, Kimberly Papirio and her husband John of Walpole and Kenneth Stevens II and his wife Karen of Norwood. Brother of Robert Stevens of NH, Alice Knickerbocker of Worthington, Muriel Conway of Holbrook, Dorothy Corridan of Weymouth, and the late Constance Gange. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 1 late granddaughter and 9 great-grandchildren.

“I used to climb steeples, ya know” was a phrase heard often when Ken (or “Papa” as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him), told stories of his days as a builder repairing churches and constructing houses. He was carpenter by trade, he built his family’s home on Dexter Street, driving every nail with his own two hands. Ken was a master craftsman at the lathe even after he went legally blind. There is no doubt, his stories will be retold for generations every time someone turns over a lathe-turned wooden bowl in their hands and finds the signature “KS” stamp. He was a builder of many things – the greatest of which was the legacy of his family. That legacy he built will live on in stories, sayings, jokes, and wooden bowls; but most of all in how he taught three generations to live, with character, integrity, humility, and value of family. His most valuable work carries the “KS” stamp in who he taught them to be, and how he taught them to love – because of this he was a very rich man.

Funeral Service at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 112 Randolph Ave., Milton, Wednesday, March 28, at 11 o’clock. Visiting Hours in the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave, East Milton Square, Tuesday 4-7pm. Interment Milton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ken’s memory to Young Life Boston South-West, 314 North St, Walpole, MA 02081 or Seasons Hospice Foundation, 8537 Solutions Center. Chicago, IL 60677-8005.
