Lily C. (Bistany) Foley

Lily C. (Bistany) Foley, of Milton, died on November 23, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  Born in Boston and raised in the City’s South End and Brighton neighborhoods, she was a graduate of Brighton High School and Boston State College.  Upon graduating college with a Degree in Education, Lily taught English at the Gavin Middle School in South Boston.  Lily left teaching to lovingly raise her two sons and later re-entered the workforce as a Social Worker with  The Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance, where she worked for over twenty years.  Lily retired in 2002 and in 2006 she was elated to become a “Gaga” to her grandson Michael. Lily spent much of her time at the Milton home of her son Robert and his wife Rita, where she quickly became Michael’s best friend and was well-known as “Mikey’s Gaga” to the neighborhood children.  Lily was a loving, compassionate and caring Mother to the late James M. Foley and devoted Daughter to the late Zicky and Mary Bistany (Tahan).  Loving Sister to Ann and William Tutterman of Milton and the late Chester Bistany.  Sister-in-law to Ann Foley of Dedham, William and Julia Lane of Dedham and Judy and John Foley of Scituate.  Beloved Aunt to Sharon Lane of Dedham, Nadia and William Lane Jr. of Dedham, Donna and Andy Camiolo of Canton, Shawn Lane of Medford,  Michael and Margit Foley of Hingham as well as seven grandnieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her husband Martin V. Foley of Falmouth.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Agatha’s Church, Milton on Wednesday, December 1st at 10:30AM. Visiting hours will be at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave. Milton, Tuesday 5-8PM. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Lily’s memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street, Boston, MA.

Margaret Maria (Morris) Leonard

Margaret Maria (Morris) Leonard, of Quincy, died in Braintree surrounded by her family on November 26, 2010. 

Born in Boston, she was a graduate of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain and was employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph for 10 years.

A resident of Milton for 30 years, Margaret moved to Quincy in 1980. Her family was her life.

Beloved wife of the late Edward J. Leonard. Loving mother of Edward J., Jr. and his wife Patricia of The Villages, Florida, Mary M. Leonard of Quincy, Ann M. Horgan and her husband John of Braintree, Margaret M. Greenberg and her husband Mark of Melrose, the late Claire T. Lavine and her husband Bennett of Needham, Kathleen R. Carten and her husband Thomas of Milton, Joan E. Cunningham and her husband Neil of Quincy and Judith F. Rezendes and her husband Robert of Sandwich. Sister of Catherine Foley of CT. Margaret was predeceased by six other brothers and sisters. Margaret is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Edward J. Curran, Sr.

Edward J. Curran, Sr., of Quincy, formerly of Dorchester, died on November 24, 2010 at South Shore Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Everett, Mr. Curran was a graduate of Somerville High School. He was a member of the US Army National Guard.

 Mr. Curran was employed as an MBTA Bus Driver and retired after thirty years of service. He was a member of Local 589. Upon his retirement,  Mr. Curran then joined Quirk Auto Parts in Braintree where he worked for nine years.

 Beloved husband of Catherine (Donovan) Curran. Devoted father of Catherine C. Hayes of So. Weymouth, Edward J. Curran,  Jr. of Washington, Robert S. Curran of Groton, Patricia A. DiNocco of Abington, Christine C. Curran-Cave  and Timothy J. Curran, both of Quincy. Son of Ellen C. (Post) Curran of Somerville and the late Mark F. Curran. Brother of Ellen Galligani of Plymouth, Thomas Curran of Maine, Mark Curran of Florida and John Curran of Merrimac. Uncle of Paul Donovan of Quincy, Daniel Donovan of Milton and many other nephews and nieces. Grandfather of Catherine, Abigail, Jack, Riley, Ryan, Fergus, Madilyn, Meara, Maxson and Jillian.

John F. “Jack” Creedon

John F. “Jack” Creedon, 82, of Milton, died on November 21, 2010. He was the beloved husband of Joan, the devoted father of Julianne of Randolph, Joan Glick and her husband Peter Glick of Foxboro and adoring grandfather of Abigail and Tyler Glick of Foxboro. He was the brother of the late William, Anastasia, Joseph and James. John served in the US Navy and in the US Marine Corps. He was a Milton Firefighter for 21 years, graduated from Boston State College in 1971 and became a middle school Math teacher in the Milton Public Schools until his retirement in 1989. Funeral will be Monday, Nov. 29 from Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave. MILTON at 9:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Mary of the Hills Church, Milton at 10:00AM. Mary Patricia (Sullivan) Corbett

Mary ”Pat” (Sullivan) Corbett died at her home in Dorchester, Sunday November 21, 2010. Beloved wife of the late Patrick Corbett. Loving mother of Teresa and James Jimenez of Braintree, Mary “Bunny“ Nipper of Mars Hill, NC, Brian and Marcia Corbett of Salem, NH, Kevin Corbett of Denison, TX, John Corbett and his late wife Julie of Spokane, WA, Dennis, Julie, Patrick and Penny Corbett, all of Dorchester and the late Kate Casanova. Norma Arline McFarlane

Norma Arline McFarlane, of Milton, died on November 20, 2010. A lifelong Milton resident, Ms. McFarlane was an active parishioner at Saint Mary of the Hills Church and a member of the Milton Women’s PM Club for over thirty years. She also volunteered at Children’s Hospital in Boston for twenty years and at Father Bill’s Place in Quincy.

Beloved  daughter of the late Percy C. and Norma (Piercy) McFarlane. Dear friend of Barbara Fitzgerald and family, Joan Corkery, Joan Williams and Ellen Courtney.

Mary H. (Sullivan) Monkouski

Mary H. (Sullivan) Monkouski of Quincy, formerly of Dorchester, died on November 19, 2010. A Registered Nurse prior to her retirement, Mary was the beloved wife of the late John J. Monkouski. Mother of John J. Monkouski of Sharon, Robert F. Monkouski of Maryland, Eleanor M. LiCalsi of New York, Nancy A. Bottazzi of Tewksbury and Maria L. Dyson of Scituate. Mary is survived by 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and she was the grandmother of the late Andrew LiCalsi. Dr. Eugene G. McCarthy Jr.

Dr. Eugene G. McCarthy Jr., age 76, passed away at Sloan Kettering Hospital on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. The cause of death was cancer. Dr. McCarthy was born in Boston. His parents were Eugene G. McCarthy and Mary Murphy McCarthy. He graduated from Boston College, Yale University School of Medicine, John Hopkins University School of Public Health and School of International Medicine. President John F. Kennedy chose Dr. McCarthy to be the Chief Medical Advisor in the Alliance for Progress Program for Paraguay. From 1970 to 1977 he was Clinical Associate Professor of Public Health at Cornell University. In 1982, having assessed the acute need for a country wide resource enabling people to obtain a second opinion, he initiated the Health Research Unit at Cornell Medical University. Dr. McCarthy is known as the “Father of Second Opinion.” Dr. McCarthy established visiting professorships at Boston College, the Gregorian, the Biblicum and the Orientale. He was a member of the American Federation of Clinical Research, American Public Health Assoc. NY City Health Assoc. and the NY State Health Association. He was a Fellow of the American Federation of Clinical Research, American College of Public Health Assoc., NY Academy of Medicine and American College of Public Health. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the KnightsofMalta. Honors and Awards; St. Ignatius Medal, Boston College High School Jesuit Secondary School, St. Francis Medal, Franciscan’s Order of Friars Minor-Province of the Holy Name, American Assoc. of the Sovereign Military, Alpha Chapter-Delta Omega Honorary Society, Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, Award of Merit, Public Health Assoc. of NY, Medallion de Ora, Universidad Nacional de Asurcion, Paraguay, Alpha Sigma Nu-Jesuit Honor Society and Class Valedictorian-Boston College. His last honor was being awarded the Clinical Professor Emeritus of Public Health at Weill Cornell Medical College. In 1965 he and his wife Maureen, built Smugglers Cove in East Boothbay where they were Innkeepers for over 40 years. Eugene was predeceased by his wife Maureen Goggin McCarthy, who died on September 3, 1999. Son, Joseph McCarthy, who was his oldest son, passed away at the age of twenty five.Survivors include his two sons, John and Paul McCarthy, Three grandchildren, Anya, Matthew and Peter McCarthy. BrotherJames McCarthy, Sisters; Marjorie Slien and Marie Ohman, As a result of their son Joseph’s death, he and his wife established the Joseph Gregory McCarthy Foundation and with the help of the Franciscan Fathers they helped the mentally impaired and homeless. A wake will be held from 10 to 11:45 am, Wednesday, November 23, 2010 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay. All are welcome to walk with the family to the graveside from the funeral home and a rosary will be recited. Interment will be at 12:15 pm at the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay, Maine. A celebration of Dr. McCarthy’s life will be held at 5 pm Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at St. Thomas More Church, 65 East 89th Street, New York, NY 10128 with a reception in the Rochester Room to follow.

Margaret A. (Hernon) Quirk

Margaret A. (Hernon) Quirk, of Weymouth, formerly of Quincy, died at home with her family on Friday, November 19, 2010. She was 91.

Margaret was born on Inishmore, Aran Islands, County Galway, Ireland. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 19. She settled in Dorchester and then Quincy where she lived for many years before moving to Weymouth ten years ago.

She worked as a quality control inspector for the Gillette Corporation in South Boston for 37 years.

Margaret was a former member of the Sodality at Sacred Heart Church. She also enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her family. Although she had no children of her own, Margaret was extremely close to her nieces and nephews and was a big part of their lives.

The beloved wife of the late Francis P. Quirk, Margaret was the loving sister of Mary Hernon of Quincy, Agnes O’Connor of Weymouth and the late Coleman and Michael Hernon. Sister-in-law of Delia Hernon of the Aran Islands. She was also the loving aunt to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews in the US and Ireland.

Gladys (Humphries) Mincey, a retired nurse, died at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Friday November 12, 2010. Born in Ogerchie, Georgia, she was a longtime resident of Boston. Beloved wife of the late Pernell Mincey. Loving mother of Mary Robinson of Randolph and surrogate mother of Doretha Humphries and Juanita Sheennete. Grandmother of Lashonda Barrow.
