Georgia M.”Faye” Feronberg

Georgia M. “Faye” Feronberg, of Dorchester, formerly of Texas, May 21, 2012. Wife of the late Charles Feronberg. Daughter of the late Rev. George and Myrtle (Patterson) Clark. She leaves to mourn her passing many family members in Texas – cousins, nieces, nephews, and many former co-workers and her church family and some close and dear friends, especially Yvonne Jackson, Mary Wilson, and Erica Perez.  Memorial Service at the Metropolitan Baptist Church, 393 Norfolk Street, Dorchester Saturday July 14, at 12 noon.

Susan D. Gardner

Susan D. Gardner “Susie”, of Milton, died at her life-long family home Thursday July 5after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer at the age of 64. A native of Milton, she was born on July 9, 1947 to mother Anna Bruzzese Gardner of New Rochelle, NY and father W. Drew Gardner of Somerset, MA. Susan graduated from Milton High School in 1965 she then went on to get her undergraduate degree from UMass Boston with a major in psychology in 1969 and a Master of Arts in Education from Suffolk University in 1971.Susan retired from the United States Postal Service where she worked for over 20 years as a Human Resources Specialist. Susan spent most of her life in Milton and enjoyed traveling to Cape Cod often for summers.  She enjoyed spending time with friends and family as much as possible.  She is lovingly survived by her sister Joy Gardner Koopman of Canon City, CO, Two nephews: David D. Koopman of Braintree, MA and James M. Koopman of Braintree/Boston, MA. Great niece Emma G. Koopman and great nephew Jackson R. Koopman both of Hollis, NH.  Susan is also survived by several cousins in the New York and New Jersey area. Family and friends are welcome to come celebrate Susan’s life.  There will be a graveside memorial service and burial held at Milton Cemetery on Saturday, July 14, at 11:00am in the Copeland Garden. In lieu of flowers Memorial gifts may be made to VNA Hospice Care, 100 TradeCenter, G-500, Woburn, MA 01801. A special thanks to the VNS Hospice nurses and personal care aids for all their help and support.  We couldn’t have fulfilled Susie’s wishes without you.

Pamela E. Leavey

Pamela E. (Mercer) Leavey, of Plympton, Thursday July 5, 2012. She was 53 years old. Former wife of Joseph A. Leavey, loving mother of James and Bryan, beloved sister of Debra Wingert and her husband Richard of Hyde Park, as well as Lee Caswell of North Carolina, and loving aunt and Godmother of Richard, Raychel, Robyn and Robert Wingert of Hyde Park, MA.  A free spirit her whole life, Pammy enjoyed the outdoors, tending her farm, cooking and singing. Along being a mom, she also enjoyed gardening and horseback riding. A private graveside service will be held in her memory as a celebration of her life.

Paul V. Mulkern

Paul V. Mulkern, 95, a retired Federal Labor Department official and labor economist, died at his home in Milton on July 10. He was born in Abington in 1916.  Shortly thereafter, his family moved to South Boston where he resided until he moved to Milton with his own young family in 1952.  After attending parochial school in South Boston, he graduated from Boston College High School in 1934 and from Boston College in 1938.  He then earned a Master of Social Work degree from the Boston College School of Social Work in 1940.  Always dedicated to the cause of social justice, he took many labor relations courses at the School of Social Work.  Upon his graduation, he joined the Shipbuilders Union and served as a union organizer.  He organized workers at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy and at shipyards in New York City. Upon the U.S. entry into World War II, Mr. Mulkern enlisted in the Navy.  He was nominated for OCS training by the captain of the ship upon which he served. Following his graduation from OCS school at Princeton, he was assigned to service in the Pacific and ended the war with the rank of Lieutenant and was commanding officer of an LCI in the South Pacific.  Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946, he returned to South Boston where he met his wife, Phyllis, in 1947.  They had six children who, along with Phyllis, were the focus of his life. After jobs with the U.S. Department of Labor, Lever Brothers and several years on the faculty at Boston College, Mr. Mulkern took a position with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor in 1954.  He worked there until his retirement in 1982 when he was serving as Regional Commissioner.  Among his many awards, he was the 1972 recipient of the Cushing Award for Excellence in Labor Management Relations, and received the Commissioner’s Award for Eminent Achievement from the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 1982. In addition to his full-time position with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, he taught nights at Boston College, Northeastern University, and Babson Institute. Mr. Mulkern was very involved with St. Elizabeth’s Church and served as a member of the Parish Council and as a lector.  Mr. Mulkern also served as a member of the Milton Warrant  [Finance] Committee and was active with the Catholic Labor Guild.  As a “triple eagle,” Mr. Mulkern was devoted to Boston College. Paul was the beloved husband of Phyllis M. (Connelly) Mulkern for 64 years.  He was the loving father of Paul V. Mulkern Jr. and his wife Diane of Milton, Virginia Mulkern and her husband John Oldham of Holliston, Elizabeth Coghlan and her husband Robert of Milton, John Mulkern and his husband John Lee of NY, NY, Anne Mulkern and her husband Lawrence Raines of Chapel Hill, NC, and Joseph Mulkern and his wife Paula of Marshfield.  He was also the proud grandfather of Jamie and Michael Oldham, Nicole, Lucas, and Alexandra Mulkern, Elizabeth and Sam Raines, and Victoria Mulkern. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Elizabeth Church, Milton, on Friday July 13 at 10:00 a.m.  Relatives and friends are invited.  Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, MILTON Thursday from 4 – 8 p.m.  Interment Saint Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s memory may be made to Father Bill’s Place, 442 Washington Street, Quincy, MA 20169.

Christopher E. Backman, of Middleboro, suddenly,  July 4, 2012.  Loving father of Kerry A. Backman, Kyle C. Backman and Cassandra R. Backman, all of Stoughton.  Devoted son of Eva (Ross) Backman of Maynard and the late Clifford Backman. Grandson of Clara Ross of New York. Brother of Clifford Backman of Maynard, Vickie L. Grandmother of Paul Michael Hynes of Braintree, Jaclyn Hynes of Hingham, Thomas Hynes of Dorchester, Victoria Hynes of Braintree, Casey Hynes of Hingham, Julia Hynes of Braintree and Brendan and Brian Hynes, both of Norwell. Ruthann Kelley-Russell

Ruthann Kelley-Russell, 68, died peacefully at home in Bridgewater, MA on July 1, 2012 with her family by her side. Ruthann was born in Boston, MA on November 2, 1943 to the late Walter E. Kelley and Dorothea (Jackman) Kelley.  Ruthann is survived by her husband of fifteen years Jeremiah V. Russell and also by her stepson Mark Russell  and his wife Jennifer L. Russell  and their children Jessica and Matthew and also survived by her cousins Gail (Farrell) Durgin and Helen Farrell and numerous other cousins. Ruthann is the sister in law of the late Robert J. and his wife Dolores E. Russell of Milford, Atty John J. Russell and his wife Marcia H. Robinson of Waltham, Francis E. Russell and his wife Maureen Gannon of Rochester, VT, James L. and his wife Carol Russell of Sarasota, FL, Thomas P. Russell and his wife Tin Xu of Amherst, and Mary C. Russell and her husband Steven Katsonis of Lakeland, FL.  Ruthann is a graduate of Boston State College and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she was a Conant Fellow. She served the children of Boston for over 40 years, as a teacher at the middle and high school level and as an administrator with a career culminating as an Assistant Head Master at Boston Latin School.  She also worked for a number of years coordinating the Boston Latin School – Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Program. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Agatha’s Church,  432 Adams Street, Milton on Saturday, July 7 at 10:30 AM.  Relatives and friends invited. Dr. James J. Campbell, DDS, in Milton, formerly of Hyde Park passed away after a long and courageous battle with Diabetes, Wednesday June 27, 2012. Best friend and beloved husband of Mary Jane (Trayers) and loving and devoted father of Molly and Chris O’Neil of Franklin, J. Colin Campbell and Ryan D. Campbell of Milton. Cherished Papa of Conor and Charlotte O’Neil of Franklin. Beloved brother of Margaret and husband Charles DelSignore, Kathleen McCarthy and husband Michael DelConte all of Hyde Park. Maureen and husband Jack Freeman of Tyngsboro, Susan and husband Keith Chapman of Greensboro, NC and the late John Campbell. Son of the late James and Marguerite (MacDonald). Loving son in law of Betty Trayers and the late James Leo Trayers, Sr. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
