Richard W. Newman, PhD

NEWMAN, Richard W. PhD, age 99, of Milton, formerly of Wollaston, September 29, 2012. Beloved husband of the late Catherine F. (McKernan) Newman. Father of Richard W. Newman, Jr. of Chicago, IL and Kathleen Newman Bakis and her husband Bruce  of  Milton. Grandfather of Kevin Newman of Buffalo, NY, Kristina N. Bakis and her husband Matthew Barsamian of Washington, DC and Jonathan N. Bakis of Milton. Uncle of Elizabeth McKernan and Carol Ann Crifo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Adams Street at Brook Road, Milton, Wednesday October 3 at 9:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON, Tuesday 3-6 PM. Interment at Milton Cemetery. Dr. Newman was a pioneer in bilingual and bicultural education programs at Boston State College and University of Massachusetts, Boston. He received both his bachelor’s degree and his doctorate from Boston University, and his master’s degree from Teachers College of the City of Boston. He was a Fulbright Scholar in France. He was an Army veteran of WWII and Korea and continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was an avid tennis player and a member of  the Wollaston Golf Club. He was a member of St. Agatha Parish in Milton and served for many years as organist and leader of the boys choir at St. Ann’s Church in Wollaston. Nidia Blanca (Gruni) Cronin

Nidia Blanca (Gruni) Cronin, a retired nurse, of Brockton, after a brief illness, Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Beloved wife of the late John M. Cronin. Loving mother of Daniel J. Cronin and his wife Bridget M. of Brockton and Cristina M. Cronin and her fianc Jason S. Allen. Sister of Sonia Gruni deRosano, Lilian Gruni deTraibel, Teresita Gruni deBermudez and Amado Gruni all of Uruguay. Survived by her American Family; Kerry and Norman Neithhold, Linda and Frank Santoli and Patricia and Phil McEnany all of Stoughton, Mary Cronin of Dorchester and Carol Cronin of Randolph. Also survived by many nieces and nephews including Patricia Bermudez, Sarah Cronin and Tim Murphy. Jean R. Lindor

Jean Rodger Lindor, 92, of Falls Church, Virginia, went peacefully on September 20, 2012 with his daughter Marie Andree by his side. He was born in Petit Goave, Haiti on March 16, 1920 and was married to Philomene Lindor  for 44 years; who passed on November 17, 1991. He owned a farm in Petit-Goave, Haiti for decades where he worked countless hours to support his family.  He followed his heart to Boston, Massachusetts in 1986 to be with his family.  He didn’t speak much English but was always able to make friends with his infectious smile. He enjoyed long walks and playing dominoes with his family. He was an amazing husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was the second eldest of two sisters and five brothers. He is remembered by his four children, Mercilia Yveline Lindor, Marie Adeline Gaston, Marie Andree Lindor and Joseph Antoine Lindor; his 10 grandchildren, Godson, Nadeige, Woody and Steve Jean Louis, Joseph Dieujuste, Thierry Lindor, Joane Duro, Claudia Leconte, Joseph Lindor Jr. and Anthony Lindor; his brother, Joseph Petion Lindor and his wife Dr Georgette Jeanty and their two children; his seven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and the rest of his family. Josephine Pugliese

Josephine Pugliese, of Canton, died on September 22, 2012. She was the beloved daughter of the late Andrew and Julia (Caprio) Pugliese. Sister of the late Molly Bellabona, Lucy Coelho, Helen Moran, and John, Albert and Netta Pugliese . Josephine is survived by many nieces and nephews. Richard D. Armstrong Jr, Esq.

Richard D. Armstrong Jr, Esq., died after a long and valiant battle with ALS, Friday September 21, 2012. He was 66 years old.

 

Born in Chelsea and raised in Milton, he was a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School, Boston College and Boston College Law School. He received a masters degree in Labor Law from Georgetown University School of Law. Mr. Armstrong was an active participant in church and community organizations.

 

As a Knight of Justice in the Sovereign Order of Malta, he was committed to aiding the poor and the sick and led pilgrimages to Lourdes for adults from the Boston area. Richard was actively involved in major fundraising for Catholic Charities. He served in a number of positions in the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, the oldest chartered military organization in the Western Hemisphere. While Captain, he traveled extensively with other members of the organization. Richard was the proud President of the USO New England for over ten years and in 2010 was named President Emeritus of the organization. He also enjoyed singing with the Clover Club of Boston.

 

Son of the late Amelia G. and Richard D. Armstrong. Loving brother of Patricia R. Armstrong and Kathleen E. Armstrong, both of Milton and Mary Armstrong Piona of Fairhaven. Uncle of Caitlin A. Piona and Gregory A. Piona. Brother-in-law of Charles J. John Quincy Flythe

John Quincy Flythe, of Boston, passed away peacefully, Friday September 21, 2012 at the age of 84.  He is survived by his devoted wife, Bertha M.(High) Flythe. Father of  daughter, Kelly Flythe Sands; son-in-law, Peter Sands and the late John A. Flythe.  Also survived by  loving grandson, Aaron R. Flythe; and great granddaughter, Alaiya V. Flythe, all of MA.  The  son of the late Herbert and Eleanor Flythe of PA; brother of the late Earl Flythe of FL; sisters, Doris Redwine of MD, Betty McWilliams of PA; in-laws, Bernice Faison of NC, Robert (Shirley) Jones of MA, and David (Lena) High of NC. Rose (Spillane) Plunkett

Rose Plunkett, 94, formerly of South Boston, West Roxbury and Milton

 

Boston – She called everyone “Lovey” and asked her family and friends to live life according to the Golden Rule of doing to others as you would have them do to you. On September20th,  Rose Ann Plunkett died in peace of natural causes at Sherrill House in Jamaica Plain surrounded by her family.

Born in Boston in 1918, Rose Plunkett was raised in South Boston where she lived for 40 years before moving to West Roxbury and then Milton.

She was baptized, schooled and married at St. Augustine’s Parish in South Boston where she regularly brought her family to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. As a young woman she worked as an office manager in the meat markets of Faneuil Hall before taking an administrative job with the Boston Public Schools where she enjoyed working with special education students whom she saw as “God’s children”. In retirement she enjoyed summers on Cape Cod at her “Irish Villa” and winters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Rose enjoyed regularly attending the St. Patrick’s day parade in South Boston where she hugged politicians and danced to “The Irish Belly Dancer”.

She leaves her sister Helen of South Boston; her son Joseph P. Plunkett III and his wife Carole of Milton; her grandson Joseph P. Plunkett IV and his wife Beth of Milton; her granddaughter Kate Plunkett Tobin and her husband John Tobin of West Roxbury; her grandson Michael  Plunkett and his wife Paquita Bass of Dedham; and her six beloved great-grandchildren Patrick, Paige, Matthew, Daniel, Susie and Rose.

She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Plunkett, Jr. (US Army WW II  POW, Purple Heart and Silver Star recipient), the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Spillane of County Kerry, Ireland and was the sister of the late John, Charles and Buddy Spillane and of Mary Mackie and Sister Saint Agnes, SND.

She will be waked at Dolan & Chapman Funeral Home in Milton Village at the intersection of Adams Street, Randolph Avenue, and Canton Avenue. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, September 24 from 4-8.  A Funeral Mass will be said on Tuesday,  September 25 at 10 am at Saint Elizabeth Church on Reedsdale Road in Milton. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Sabrina Gardner, of West Roxbury, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Monday September 17, 2012. She was 71 years old. Born in Cleveland, Ohio,  Sabrina was a longtime Boston resident. Barbara J. (Moynihan) Noonan

Barbara J. (Moynihan) Noonan, of Milton, September 17, 2012. Beloved wife of 67 years of William P. Noonan.  Barbara is survived by nieces and nephews.  Visiting hours at the Dolan Funeral Home,  460 Granite Ave. Milton on Friday, 1-3 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 3 PM. Barbara was a late volunteer at The Little Sisters of the Poor, Boston, The Kennedy Hospital in Brighton, Saint Coletta School, and Carney Hospital.  She was also a late member of the Catholic Womens Club of Milton and the Milton Womens Club.
