Alice K. Mahoney

of Weymouth died on July 2, 2009. She worked as a Supervisor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Welfare, for over 35 years and was an avid reader and animal lover.

Alice graduated from the University of Miami and also taught at the Glover School in Milton.

She was the loving daughter of the late Leo and Kathryn (Crowley) Mahoney. Sister of Marjorie A. Mahoney of Hingham, Edward J. Mahoney of Sacramento, CA and Jane M. Boomer of Hingham and Stuart, FL. Alice leaves a niece, several nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and many friends. A graveside service will be held in Saint Paul Cemetery, Hersey St., Hingham on Friday, July 10 at 11:30AM. Fr. Justin J. Bailey OFM

75 years of age, a professed Franciscan Friar for 54 years and a priest for 49 years, died on Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Maria Manor in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Fr. Bailey was born on November 24, 1933, in Lowell, Mass., to Angus and Gertrude (née Hall) Bailey. He was baptized Angus Joseph Bailey in Sacred Heart Church in Lowell. He attended Sacred Heart parochial school and Keith Academy in Lowell, graduating in 1951. Deciding on a Franciscan religious vocation, he then attended St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, NY, for three years.

He entered Holy Name Province of the Order of Friars Minor at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., on August 12, 1953, receiving the religious name of Justin, and professed his first vows there on August 13, 1954 before Fr. Cassian Kirk, OFM. He then pursued philosophical studies at St. Francis College in Rye Beach, N.H., and theological studies at St. Anthony Friary in Butler, N.J., and Holy Name College in Washington, D.C. He professed final vows on August 20, 1957 at Christ the King Seminary at St. Bonaventure, N.Y., before Fr. Celsus Wheeler, OFM, and was ordained to the priesthood on March 12, 1960, in the Church of Mount Saint Sepulchre, the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, D.C., by Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, the Apostolic Delegate.

As a Franciscan, Fr. Bailey enjoyed a wide-ranging career as foreign missionary, hospital chaplain, preacher, and spiritual director. Following a year of pastoral studies at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, Mass. (1960-1961), he volunteered for the Province’s mission in Goiás, Brazil, where he served nine years. Returning to the United States in 1970, he ministered at Christ House in Lafayette, N.J., as retreat master and counselor. Then in 1973, he became Guardian and Director of Formation at Holy Name College in Washington, D.C. In 1976, he was appointed Provincial Spiritual Assistant for the Third Order of St. Francis, residing at St. Francis Retreat House in Rye Beach, N.H.

In 1978, Fr. Bailey began working as hospital chaplain at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., while taking courses in Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of South Florida. He then pursued graduate studies, earning a master’s degree in psychology from Boston College and a master’s degree in theology from the Weston School of Theology in 1982. That year he returned to his hospital chaplaincy at St. Anthony’s Hospital, also serving as spiritual assistant at Our Lady’s House of Prayer in Clearwater, Fla. In 1985, he was appointed Guardian and Director of the Province’s House of Prayer at St. Joseph Friary in Warwick, N.Y. In 1987, he again returned to hospital chaplaincy at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, also taking up retreat ministry at Our Lady of Divine Providence in Clearwater, Fla.

In 1989, Fr. Bailey began a full-time ministry as a preacher of retreats in the Province’s Ministry of the Word, based first at St. James Friary in Belleair Bluffs, Fla. He went to Canada in 1992 to continue that ministry, first at Mount Carmel Centre in Niagara Falls, and then in 1996, at St. Bonaventure Friary in Toronto. In 1998, he transferred to the Franciscan Center in Andover, Mass., and in 2000, to St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, Mass. In 2003, he became a full-time pastoral associate at St. Anthony Shrine, also assisting at Espiritu Santo Parish in Safety Harbor, Mass. On March 12 of this year he retired to St. Anthony Friary in St. Petersburg, Fla., and on June 23, due to declining health, he transferred to Maria Manor in St. Petersburg.

A Wake was held from 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service at
Brett Funeral Home in St. Petersburg, Fla. A Mass was celebrated by Fr. James Toal, OFM, Guardian of St. Anthony Friary, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8 at St. Mary Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in St. Petersburg.

There will be a Viewing from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 9 at St. Anthony Shrine, 100 Arch Street, Boston, MA, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Provincial Minister John F. O’Connor, OFM, will preside and Fr. Daniel Lanahan, OFM, will preach the homily. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury, Mass.

Fr. Bailey is survived by his brothers, Kevin of Westford, Mass. and Brendon of Dracut, Mass., and sisters, Gertrude of Lowell, Mass., and Miriam Provincher of Dracut, Mass. Condolences may be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Bailey of 46 Maple Road, Westford MA 01886.

Audrey L. (LaBier) Kane

a retired bus operator for the MBTA, died Sunday July 5 in Mashpee. She was 79 years old.

Born and raised in Dorchester, she was a graduate of Hyde Park High School. Mrs. Kane retired from the MBTA in 1995. A longtime resident of Roslindale, she moved to Mashpee after retirement.

Beloved wife of the late John “Red” Kane. Loving mother of Susan Kane of Hyde Park, Donna Kane Foley of Westwood and Stephen Kane of Littleton, CO. Devoted memere of Jacqueline Kane, Nicole Kane and Meghan Kane. Sister of Joseph LaBier of RI, Louis LaBier of Manomet, Carol Fagan of Bridgewater, Lorraine F. Kane of NH and the late Helen Walter.

Kathleen A. "Kay" (Quinlan) Bird

85, of Milton, formerly of Dorchester, died on July 3, 2009.

Born in Boston, Kay was a graduate of Boston Girls High School. She was an active parishioner at Saint Gregory’s Church in Dorchester and Saint Agatha’s Church in Milton. Kay was also active as a volunteer at the Knights of Columbus, Dorchester, Council 180, and at an orphanage in Boston.

Kay was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and was a longtime season ticket holder. She would oftentimes watch and listen to away games as she summered in Green Harbor, Marshfield.

Kay was also employed in the kitchen at Boston College High School for over 20 years.

Beloved wife of the late Edwin W. Bird. Loving mother of Cheryl A. Kamataris of East Falmouth and the late Karen M. Brennan. Sister of Mary Sullivan of Milton and the late James Quinlan, Helen Flavin, Patricia Shields and William Quinlan. Grandmother of Alexandra and Audrey Kamataris and Calie and Stephen Brennan. Also survived by her great-grandson, Dante, and several nieces and nephews.

Alice T. (McClumpha) Myers

a retired bookkeeper for Lotus, died Sunday June 28 at her home in Dorchester after a long illness. She was 61 years old.

Born and raised in Scotland, she was a longtime resident of Dorchester.

Beloved wife of Demosthenese Myers. Loving sister of John Millar, Betty Evans, Jean Carr, Ella Colquhoun, Josephn Fife and the late William McClumpha.

Francis X. "Inga" Walsh

of Milton and Naples, FL, died on June 29, 2009 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Born in the Dorchester section of Boston, MA, Mr. Walsh was a Hall of Fame Basketball Player at Northeastern University and at Milton High School.

He was the first basketball player ever inducted into Northeastern University’s inaugural Hall of Fame. After graduating from Northeastern, Mr. Walsh played under contract for the New York Knicks.

Upon the conclusion of his playing career, Mr. Walsh became a banker in South Boston where he worked until his retirement. He was also a longtime volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in Immokolee, FL.

Mr. Walsh was a veteran of the US Navy and the US Army, and he served during the latter years of World War II and Korea.

Beloved husband of Carolyn M. (Turner) Walsh. Father of Edwin P. Walsh and his wife, Cathleen, of Milton, Francis M. Walsh and his wife, Debra, of Concord, and Dennis W. and his wife, Suzanne, of Houston, TX. Brother of the late H. Robert Walsh, Annedith Tomasello and Elinor Walsh. Grandfather of Matthew, Colin, Katherine, Meagan and Caitlin. Master of his favorite dogs: Elvis, Lucy and Roger.

Joanna A. Henry

a lifelong resident of Milton, died Sunday June 28 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Brockton. She was 99 years old.

Born and raised in Milton, she was a graduate of Simmons College, Boston University (BS) and Yale University (Masters in Hospital Administration). She had served in the US Army Dietician Corps as a 1st Lt. during World War II. Miss Henry was an administrator at Cambridge Homes for Aged People for over 20 years.

Joanna was active with many civic and cultural groups in Milton, including Milton Residences for the Elderly, Forbes House, Meals on Wheels, Committee Against Airplane Noise, Precinct 6 Warden and longtime member of the Milton Democratic Town Committee. She was also a member of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Beloved daughter of the late Michael J. and Margaret M. (Nee) Henry. Sister of the late Sylvia Grey, Ethel Henry Dunn, John T. Henry, James F. Henry, C. Helen Henry, Barbara T. Henry and Elizabeth Henry. Aunt of Marie Frazier, Peggy Dray, Dorothy Grey Russo, Janet Grey and the late James L. Dunn and Paul Henry Dunn. Joanna is survived by 11 grandnieces and grandnephews, 10 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews and a great-great-grandniece.

Diane M. (Costello) Allison

of Braintree, formerly of Pembroke, died at her home after an illness on June 28, 2009.

Born in Boston, Mrs. Allison was raised in South Boston and Weymouth. She graduated from Weymouth High School and Boston State College. She taught in the Hartford, VT public school system, then raised her family in Pembroke and Braintree, MA.

For several years, Mrs. Allison worked as a tax administrator at Nedel, Welch and Stone, CPA of Rockland.

In her spare time, Mrs. Allison enjoyed running, photography and spending time with family.

Beloved wife of Stephen D. Allison. Mother of Jamie E. A. Brown of Boston, Lyndsey M. Allison of Quincy, Stephen D. Allison of Boston and Gregory D. Allison of Braintree. Jeanne R. Rathgeb-Ryan

51, of Plantation, FL, formerly of Quincy, died on June 17, 2009.

Born in Boston, Jeanne graduated from Archbishop Williams in 1976 and from Simmons College in 1980. She had a successful career as a Sales Manager in radio advertising in Florida.

Beloved daughter of the late Joseph A. and Marguerite (Hayes) Rathgeb. Sister of Joseph P. Rathgeb and his wife Elaine of Foxboro, and Susan M. Coulter and her husband Blair of Wrentham. Aunt of Samantha, Alison, Caroline, Blair, Ryan and Jack. Niece of Thomas and Gerri Hayes, Bernard, Carolyn and late Francis Hayes and Gertrude and the late Paul McCabe.
