Joan Marie Tomlinson, of Quincy, formerly of Dorchester, died on October 31, 2010 at Massachusetts General Hospital. Born in Boston and raised in the Dorchester section of the city, Joan worked as a Clerk at Boston Edison for thirty years. Beloved daughter of the late John and Mary (Hynes) Tomlinson. Sister of the late Robert T. Tomlinson and John J. Tomlinson. Joan is survived by her nephew, Steven J. Tomlinson of Florida. Marguerite E. (Bradley) Wilheim

Marguerite E. (Bradley) Wilheim, died on October 27, 2010. Formerly of Boston (Mattapan), Norwood and Westwood she was the beloved wife of the late John N. Wilheim. Loving daughter of the late Thomas and Mary A. (Crosby) Bradley. Sister of the late Helen Flaherty, Thomas F. “Frank” Bradley and Irma Halligan. Marguerite is survived by four nieces. James Bernard Gibbons

James Bernard Gibbons, died after a long illness on October 27, 2010 in Braintree.  He was formerly of Milton, Quincy, Dorchester and South Boston. Beloved son of the late Charles H. and Eleanor E. (Wilson). Brother of William T. of Bourne and the late Charles H. Jr of Milton. Cousin of Patricia L. (Gibbons) Greene of So. Weymouth. In addition, he leaves nephews Gregory Gibbons and Matthew Gibbons, nieces Meghan Rodes and Christine Allenberg, a grandnephew and three grandnieces, plus numerous cousins. A ’65 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Jim sailed as a Marine Engineer for 38 years on several of the world’s oceans, accumulating many stories and friends along the way. Visiting hours will be at the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave. MILTON on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 from 9:00-10:30AM with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Saint Brendan’s Church, Gallivan Blvd., Dorchester at 11:00AM. Kathleen Ann “Kathy” (Dolan) Newberry

Kathleen (Dolan) Newberry of Milton, age 54, died peacefully at her home on Sunday October 24th after a courageous five year battle with cancer.  Daughter of Joseph Dolan and the late Virginia (O’Toole) Dolan, she is survived by her husband Kevin, her sisters Terry Dolan of Dorchester, Martha Cosgrove and her husband Brian of Milton, her brothers Bill Dolan of Marshfield and his wife Jill, Tom Dolan of Westborough and his wife Maura, her brother Joe Dolan of Milton, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her optimism, strength and dignity, especially in the last years of her illness, were an inspiration.  Kathy’s family is deeply indebted to her entire care team at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, most especially Drs. Suzanne George and Susan Block and Nurse Practitioner Kathy Polson for their superb care, and their kindness.

A graduate of Fontbonne Academy and Regis College, she began a career in event management first at Conventures, Inc., then Bayside Exposition Center, and for the past 10 years as Director of Conferences and Events at Northeastern University.

Kathy will be remembered for her sense of humor, her style and grace, and most importantly her steadfast devotion to her family and her legion of friends. A loving daughter, wife, sister and friend, she was treasured by all who knew her. She touched many lives and she will be missed.

Mary Therese (Kenneally) Haggerty

Mary Therese (Kenneally) Haggerty, of Dorchester, formerly of Charlestown, died at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on October 19, 2010. Mary was a retired manager at John Hancock Insurance, where she worked for forty years.  She was also a longtime volunteer at Saint Francis House, Boston . Beloved wife of the late Robert Haggerty. Loving sister of George H. Kenneally of Dorchester and the late Joseph and Francis Keane, Robert, Richard, John, Walter and James Kenneally and Margaret Wodjakowski. Mary was the daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret (McDonough) Kenneally. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Martha R. (Sullivan) Cadigan

Martha R. (Sullivan) Cadigan, of Milton, formerly of Duxbury, died on October 17, 2010. Born in New York City, Mrs. Cadigan graduated from Brighton High School in 1933. She attended Simmons College in Boston and worked at Gilchrist Department Store in Boston and at the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

In 1938, Mrs. Cadigan married and moved to Milton where she became an active member of the community. She joined St. Mary’s of the Hills Church Sodality and Guild and also joined the Milton Women’s Club.

In 1991, Mrs. Cadigan relocated to Duxbury, MA. She was a Board Member for the Friends of the Council on Aging and volunteered at a thrift shop that raised funds for Duxbury High School. She was presented a Presidential Award by President George Bush for volunteering over 4,000 hours to civic causes. Mrs. Cadigan also played Bridge four days a week.

In 2008, Mrs. Cadigan moved back to Fuller Village in Milton where she enjoyed knitting and occasional Bridge games.

Beloved wife of the late Thomas F. Cadigan. Loving mother of Martha A. Sullivan and her late husband J. Jeffrey of Walpole, Thomas F. Cadigan and his wife Mary of Miami, FL, Maureen Mancini and her late husband Robert of Madison, CT, Dr. Richard C. Cadigan of Milton and Robert P. Cadigan of South Boston. Sister of Gertrude Boyd of Mashpee and the late Richard, John and Cornelius Sullivan, Mary Rourke and Elizabeth Coughlin.

Mrs. Cadigan is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Bruce Brian Barnett

Bruce Brian Barnett, a retired teacher and longtime Dorchester resident, died at Carney Hospital, Dorchester, Friday October 15, 2010. He was 62 years old.

Born in Boston, he was a graduate of the Boston Public Schools and Boston State Teacher College. Mr. Barnett was a social studies teacher for over thirty years. He recently retired from the Roderick Elementary School, Wrentham.

Bruce was an avid history buff. He built dioramas of World War II and participated in Civil War re-enactments. In this capacity, he served as an extra in the movie Glory.

Beloved son of the late Earl and Dorothy (Sullivan) Barnett. Loving brother of Noralie C. Barnett of Dorchester, Dorothy M. Keller and her husband Michael of Brighton and the late Lisa Barnett and her partner Melissa Scott of Portsmouth, NH. Uncle of Eric B. Keller and Thomas F. Keller, both of Brighton. Bruce is survived by his beloved airedale terrier Hamish.

William J. Callahan

William J. Callahan, died at his home in Quincy, Thursday October 14, 2010. He is the beloved husband of Margaret (Kent) Callahan. Father of William J. Callahan Jr. of Rockland, LeeAnn Sorensen of Braintree, James Callahan and Robert Callahan, both of North Weymouth, Edward Callahan of Quincy, Gwendolyn Klutsch of NH and Elizabeth Harrington and Robert Raimondi, both of Quincy. Bill is also survived by one brother, John J. Callahan, Jr. of Braintree; a sister, Mary Smith of Needham and was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Kelley and brother, Robert Callahan. William is also survived by seven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St John the Baptist Church, Quincy, Monday October 18 at 11:30 AM.  Relatives and friends invited. He was a veteran of the US Navy and 43-year employee of Boston Gas.

Fr. Donan McGovern OFM

Fr. Donan McGovern, OFM, 82 years of age, a professed Franciscan friar for 60 years and a priest for 55, died in his room at St. Anthony Shrine, Boston, on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, apparently of a heart attack.

He was born Robert E. McGovern on Sept. 24, 1928 in Forest Hills (Queens), New York to Thomas and Mary (Rutledge) McGovern. He attended PS 144 in Forest Hills and graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn in 1947. Later that year, he enrolled at St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary where he studies for two years.

Fr. Donan was received into the Order of Friars Minor in Holy Name Province August 12, 1949 at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., and professed his first vows there August 14, 1950 before Very Rev. Thomas Plassmann, OFM.

He then studied philosophy at St. Stephen Friary in Croghan, N.Y. and St. Anthony Friary in Butler, N.J., receiving his BA from St. Bonaventure University in 1952. He then studied theology at Holy Name College in Washington, DC., from 1952-56.

He made his final profession of vows there Sept. 17, 1953, and was ordained to the priesthood at the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, June 9, 1955 by Archbishop Amleto Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate to the US.

Following his ordination to the priesthood, Fr. McGovern served briefly as assistant pastor at St. Richard Church, Emporia, Va. (1956-57) and St. Thomas Parish, Beach Haven, NJ (1957-1959), and then volunteered for the Province’s mission in the Alto La Paz region of Bolivia, where he served for twelve years (1959-71).

He then returned to ministry in the United States, serving as assistant pastor in

St. Joseph Parish, East Rutherford, N.J. (1971-75), St. Francis Chapel, Providence, R.I. (1975-77), and Holy Cross Parish, Bronx, N.Y. (1977-79). He then served for ten years (1979-89) as promoter for the Franciscan Missionary Union, based at St. Francis Friary, New York, N.Y.

In 1989, he came to New England to serve on the pastoral staff of St. Anthony Shrine, Boston, Mass., where he remained until his death, except for a two year interval (1993-95) at the Franciscan Center in Wilmington, Del. Besides serving on the daily schedule of Masses and confession, Fr. McGovern was very active in working on retreats for Engaged Encounter and with people in recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Margaret Mary Lemieux, and many nieces and nephews.

The Friars will greet the body on Sunday, October 17th at 4:00 PM in the First Floor Church of Saint Anthony Shrine, 100 Arch Street, Boston. Viewing will conclude with a Wake Service at 7:00 PM in the First Floor Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Second Floor Church Monday, October 18th at 11:00 AM. All are invited.

Paul J. Kearney

Paul J. Kearney, of Milton, a retired custodian with The Boston Globe, died on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at the Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Canton. He was 75. Paul was born in Boston and was a lifelong resident of Milton. He was a graduate of Milton High School An avid walker, Paul could often be seen on his daily route through the neighborhood and Cunningham Park. He was also a regular at Newcomb Farms Restaurant in Milton and a member of the Yaz League. He was the beloved son of the late F. Joseph and Catherine I. (Brogan) Kearney, the brother of the late Richard and Kevin Kearney, the uncle of Marie Morse and her husband Wade of Milton and Richard J. Kearney of West Newbury, VT and the great-uncle of Katie, Christopher and Grant. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Milton, Monday, October 18 at 10:30AM.
