Mary Kate (Gallagher) Manning

Mary Kate (Gallagher) Manning, died at St. Patrick’s Manor, Framingham, after a short illness, Saturday February 4, 2012. She was surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born 101 years ago in County Leitrim, Ireland. She came to Boston as a young woman and was a homemaker and loving mother to five children. She lived many years in Dorchester Lower Mills and summered with her children on Cape Cod. The last four years, Mary has resided at Saint Patrick’s Manor in Framingham. She was a lifelong member of the Co. Donegal Club, Leitrim Society, Irish Music Club and Irish Social Club, all of which she enjoyed and was proud of. Beloved wife of the late Patrick J. Manning. Loving mother of Kevin J. Manning of Plymouth, Michael J. Manning and his wife Priscilla of Avon, Frank Manning and his wife Janice of Framingham, Eileen M. Hallisey and her late husband Edward L. Hallisey, MD of Avon and Gerald G. Manning and his wife Marian of South Yarmouth. Survived by nine loving grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Gregory Church, 2223 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, Friday February 10 at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Helene Driscoll (Diggin) Padula

Helene Driscoll (Diggin) Padula, of Milton, died on February 5, 2012 at age 85.  Beloved wife for over 47 years of George T. Padula.  Cherished mother of Donna Driscoll Tarnoff of Osterville, MA, Robert F. Driscoll of Medford, MA, George T. Padula Jr. of Westwood, MA and Elizabeth Padula Tourtelotte of Newton, MA.  Loved grandmother to Megan Driscoll Kealty, Ryan Driscoll, Nicholas and Alexander Tarnoff, Ellen and Emily Padula and Grace and Clare Tourtelotte.  Loving sister to Joseph Diggin of Weymouth, MA.   Beloved aunt and cousin to many.  Predeceased in 1955 by her husband, Robert F. Driscoll.  Daughter of the deceased Michael and Bridget “Della” Diggin, natives of Ireland.  A 1949 graduate of Boston University Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester, MA, class of 1945, Helene had a long career as a physical therapist.  Known to countless patients through nearly 40 years as a therapist with the Milton Visiting Nurses and the Veterans Hospital of Jamaica Plain, Helene loved her work helping people regain their mobility.  Active in her community, Helene was elected as a Milton Town Meeting Member for over 30 years and served by appointment to the Milton Warrant Committee.  Helene was a Corporator since 1998 of Milton Hospital and a member of the Milton Hospital Auxiliary.  She also served on the special events and generation campaign committees with the Friends of Milton Hospital.  She was a past treasurer and president of the Milton PM Club and former President, Milton Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), as well as a past treasurer of the Milton Meals on Wheels.  With her husband George, she enjoyed overseas travels and socializing with their many friends in recent years at White Cliffs in Plymouth, MA. Always ready to step onto the dance floor, Helene was well known for her energy and vivacious spirit as well as her athleticism having taught her four children to ski. A funeral from the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, Milton will be held at 10am on Thursday February 9th followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 350 Reedsdale Road, Milton, MA.  Services will conclude with burial at Milton Cemetery.   Visiting hours will be held at the Dolan Funeral Home in Milton on Wednesday February 8th from 4 to 8pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Helene’s name may be made to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital -Milton, Development Office , 199 Reedsdale Road, Milton, MA 02186 or Sargent College, 635 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA 02215, c/o Jess Kelly.

Brian P. O’Neill

Brian P. O’Neill, a retired fire department dispatcher, died at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, after a long illness, Friday February 3, 2012. He was 57 years old. Born and raised in Quincy, he attended Mass. Hospital School in Canton. Brian was employed at Instron Instruments in Canton and later worked as a dispatcher for the Lexington Fire Dept for several years. An accomplished musician, Brian was self-taught on the guitar, keyboard and saxophone. He also wrote and performed his own songs. Father of Christal Snell of Woburn. Son of the late William T. “Brother” and Gertrude “Sis” (Kerrigan) O’Neill. Brother of Attorney Peter O’Neill of Quincy, Ellen M. Matranga of Weymouth, Patricia A. and her husband George Wirtz of Quincy, Michael A. O’Neill and his wife Deborah of Weymouth, Christina O’Neill of Quincy and the late Paul K. O’Neill, William “Bill” O’Neill, Nancy A. Duff and Evelyn Walsh. Brian is also survived by many nieces and nephews. At Brian’s request, funeral services are private.

Christine F. Condon

Christine F. (Yosgandes) Condon, died at her home in Marion, Friday February 3, 2012. Born January 30, 1953, Chrissy died after a brief struggle with lung cancer. Loving daughter of John J. Yosgandes of South Yarmouth and the late Mary V. Yosgandes. Beloved wife of William T. Condon. She also leaves a beloved son and daughter-in-law, William P. Condon and Katherine and her new grandson Will, all of Marion; her father John J. Yosgandes and his wife Theresa A. Mahoney, of South Yarmouth.  A 1976 graduate of Stonehill College and a 1978 graduate of Barry University School of Social Work, Chrissy was a school adjustment counselor in Norton Public Schools for 25 years. Anna T. Cussen

Anna T. Cussen, a retired teacher, died at Hancock Park, Quincy, Thursday February 2, 2012. She was 95 years old. Born in Boston, she was raised in Dorchester and was a graduate of Dorchester High School for Girls and Teachers College, class of 1938. Miss Cussen taught at the University of Rhode Island, in Connecticut and Duxbury before returning to the City of Boston. She taught business classes at Jeremiah Burke and Dorchester High Schools. Miss Cussen was a longtime resident of Milton, where she was active at St. Mary of the Hills Church and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Reunion Committee of Teachers College. Beloved daughter of the late James E. and Elizabeth T. (O’Connell) Cussen. Sister of the late Mary G. Cussen, James e. Cussen, Joseph F. Cussen, Elizabeth K. Cussen, William A. Cussen, Margaret F. Dempsey and Vincent I. Cussen. Anna is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Cathleen A. “Kay” Battles

Cathleen A. “Kay” (O’Leary) Battles, of Milton and Hollywood, FL, Monday January 30, 2012.  Beloved wife of the late William E. Battles, Jr.  Devoted daughter of the late Dennis J. & Catherine M. (O’Connell) O’Leary.  Cathleen died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at age 97.  She was a citizen of Ireland and the United States and was a parishioner of Saint Agatha’s Church.  Devoted mother of Cathleen B. Colella & her husband Henry of Locust Valley, NY, William E. Battles, III & his wife Jeanette of Brewster, Marilyn C. Gregory & her husband Thomas of Norwood, Rita M. Battles of Milton, Anne M. Battles of Milton, Joanne M. Burke of Norwood, Dennis F. Battles & his wife Marie of Braintree, and Daniel F. Battles & his wife Janice of Kingston.  Loving sister of  Fr. Daniel F. O’Leary, OMI of Tewksbury, Rita Toland of Mount Pleasant, SC, the late Dr. John J. O’Leary, the late Charles T. O’Leary, Esq. and the late Sister Anna M. Walter F. Burke, Jr.

Walter F. Burke, Jr., 87, of Milton, died at his residence on January 27, 2012.  Born in Detroit, Michigan, Walter moved to Milton when he was 4 years old. He was a graduate of Boston College High School.

Walter served in the US Army for three years during World War II and was held in captivity as a prisoner of war for six months. He was eventually released from captivity when the Allies liberated Germany.

Walter worked as a Revenue Agent and Auditor for the Internal Revenue Service for forty-seven years. He was a fan of all local sports teams, he enjoyed reading and he also studied history. He enjoyed playing golf and traveled extensively with his late sister, who worked as a travel agent.

Walter was the beloved son of the late Walter F. and Elizabeth J. (Kelleher) Burke and brother of the late Alice E. Retsis. Walter is survived by his cousin, Carolyn M. Long and her husband Scott E. Brumburgh and their son Eric G.M. Brumburgh, all of Maryland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Milton on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10:30AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Edward E. “Ed” O’Neil

Edward E. “Ed” O’Neil, 54, of Quincy, died on January 29, 2012. Born in Boston, Ed was a lifelong Quincy resident. He graduated from Quincy High School and UMass-Boston. A US Navy Veteran, Ed worked as a Substance Abuse Counselor.

Ed worked for several years at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans on Court Street in Boston and most recently ran the RISE Program at the Brockton VA Hospital.

Beloved husband of Rosalie (Lane) O’Neil. Loving father of Sarah O’Neil Evjy and her husband Jonathan Evjy, Katie, Samantha, and Shaun O’Neil, all of Quincy. Brother of Robert of Randolph, Richard of Nantucket, Ellen Lyons and William O’Neil, both of Quincy. Devoted grandfather of Keeley Evjy. Ed is also survived by many nieces and nephews, in-laws, extended family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1015 Sea Street, Houghs Neck, Quincy, on Friday, Feb. 3 at 10:00AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited.
