Benjamin Pires

Pires, Benjamin

Benjamin Mendes Pires, 97, of Dorchester, died Monday.   He was born April 16, 1916, in Fogo, Cabo Verde. Benjamin migrated to the United States in 1976 and has resided and worked in the United States for the remainder of his life. Benjamin is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of sixty-five years, Alina Gomes Pires.

Benjamin, like many hard working immigrants, was a factory maintenance man for many years.  Outside of working to provide for his family, he had various interests. While living in his native country Cabo Verde, he farmed his land and raised many livestock, including horses, chickens, roosters, donkeys, turkeys, pigs, cows, sheep, goats, and birds. His passion for farming was evident in his front yard in Dorchester, where he grew corn, tomatoes, squash, cucumber, kale and other vegetables.  Benjamin also loved and enjoyed the simply pleasures of music and dancing.   Benjamin (aka, Pai, Figjinho, and Figjinho de Braco) will be remembered mostly for being a generous sole to family, friends and strangers.

Benjamin is survived by five children: Julia Pires, of New Bedford; Maria Pires Miranda, of Brockton; Maria Julia Pires, of Worcester; and Ernestina Pires and Francisco Pires Gomes, of Dorchester.  He also is survived by twenty grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A viewing will be held from 5-9 PM, Friday, at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, Dorchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday at Saint Edith Stein Parish, 71 East Main Street, Brockton. Interment immediately following at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.

June E. (Lake) Farrand

June Evelyn Farrand, of Quincy died Tuesday, October 22,  2013, in South Shore Hospital after an extended battle with declining health.  The daughter of the late Marie (Cambria) and Cody Lake, she was born and raised in Dorchester, graduating from Dorchester High School in 1964.  She was a resident of Quincy for the past 47 years.  

June was employed as a civil servant for both the Quincy Police Department, Fire Department and Public Works Department as well as working at Quincy Hospital, retiring from the City in 2011.  A devoted parishioner of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Houghs Neck , she was Past Prefect of Our Lady’s Sodality, Past Regent of Catholic Daughters and a member of Mother’s Club.  June was a recipient of the 1987 Houghs Neck Good Neighbor Award.  Bowling, dancing, conversing and spending time with friends were among her favorite things to do.

June is survived by her sons, Michael Farrand and his wife Jennifer of Frankfort, IL and Marc Farrand and his wife Joanne of Wrentham.  Grandchildren;  Rebecca and Kelsey Farrand of Pittsburgh, PA and Brandon and Cameron Farrand of Wrentham.  She is also survived by her dear friends, Sue, Donna, Gail, Diane and Sheila, and her former husband, Red Farrand.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Most Blessed Sacrament Church,  1015 Sea St. Quincy on Saturday, October 26 at 10:00 AM.  Relatives and friends invited.  Visitation Friday 4-8 PM in Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave. EAST MILTON. Interment Private.

Albert Siris

Albert Siris, (also Siauris)  passed away peacefully after a brief illness, Saturday October 19, 2013. Loving husband of 49 years to the late Pauline Lallis.  Son of the late Joseph and Caroline Siauris and brother to the late Joann Siauris of Milton. Survived by his two sons Kenneth (Carol) Siris of Marshfield and Robert (Louise) Siris of Milton.  Also survived by five grandchildren, Joseph and Brendan Patrick Siris of Marshfield and Melanie, A.J. and Lillian Siris of Milton.  Albert received his BA in Chemistry from the University of Alabama, where he also played football for the famous Crimson Tide. During the Second World War, he faithfully served his country in the Army Air Force.  After the war, he was employed in various roles as a chemical engineer for Monsanto, then Lever Brothers and finally the U.S. Army Natick Research and Development Laboratories, where he authored numerous important research papers.    He was very proud of his Lithuanian ancestry.  He was a member and officer in the Cambridge and South Boston Lithuanian Citizens Clubs and a member of the Knights of Lithuania.  He loved travelling with his wife and family. He was an avid follower of sports, in particular football and baseball.   He enjoyed his large circle of friends & family. He loved spending time with his grandchildren & played an active role in their activities. He will be remembered as an immensely friendly person who would greet you with a warm smile and a strong, sincere handshake. He lived a long and prosperous life. Relatives & friends are invited to attend a Mass at St. Peter’s Lithuanian Catholic Church, 75 Flaherty Way, South Boston, Saturday October 26th at 10:00 AM. Interment at New Calvary Cemetery. Lorraine (Dufault) Flynn

Lorraine L. (Dufault) Flynn, of Milton and Scituate, passed away October 20, 2013 surrounded by her devoted family. Beloved wife of the late Christopher J. Flynn Jr. Loving mother of Patricia A. and her husband George F. Delaney, Jr. of PA, Mary L. and her late husband Conrad W. Moon of CT, Christopher J. III and his wife Janis Flynn of Scituate, Margaret T. and her husband Paul Gibbons of Whitman, Richard E. and his wife Virginia B. Flynn of Hull, Michael W. and his wife Terri Flynn of RI, and Lorraine F. and her husband Stephen Kiley of Milton. Sister of the late Amelia Dwyer. Survived by eighteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine was born in Lynn, MA and grew up in South Boston.  She graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls and raised her children in Dorchester and Scituate before moving to Milton. She was a volunteer through the Milton Hospital Auxiliary for many years and worked as an aide in the Milton Public Schools.  She was a member of the Boston College Faculty Wives’ Club, Milton Woman’s Club and the League of Catholic Women. Lorraine loved spending time with her family and her many dear friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Adams Street at Brook Road, Milton, Friday October 25, at 10:30 AM. Carl S. Crawford

Carl S. Crawford, 32, of Brockton, died  suddenly,  on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.   Born on June 4, 1981 he  was a lifelong resident of Brockton.

 Carl had various interests,  enjoying  drawing, writing verse, fishing and animals.  As a child, Carl was a member of the Boy Scouts. He also volunteered at the Sweden Food Pantry in Maine and helped to build his Dad’s house in Maine.

 Son of Carla (Blondell) Crawford  of Orange Beach, AL and the late Michael Crawford.    Step-son of Daniel Croke, of Albany,  ME,  brother of Samantha Croke  and Melissa Hughes and her husband Brian of Brockton , nephew of   Claudia Blondell and George Nutter of Lovell, ME and Stephen and SueEllen Crawford of Lewistown, PA,  uncle of  Aidan and Brendan Hughes and Abbey LeBlanc of Brockton  and cousin of Harley Crawford of Lewistown, PA

Visitation Tuesday, Oct 22, 4-7 PM  at the Dolan & Chapman Funeral Home, 5 Canton Ave. MILTON VILLAGE .  Funeral Service will immediately   follow at 7:00 PM.  Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.  Interment private.

Jean-Marie Wheaton Prou

Jean-Marie Wheaton Prou, was called home to the Lord, on the evening of Sunday, October 13, 2013, at the age of 70, after a long and hard fought battle with illnesses, at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Dorchester. He is survived, by his mother, Agnes Fanfan, 95, of Dorchester, his wife, Eutemia Prou, 58, of Waterford, NY, four siblings, three children, and five grandchildren.

Jean-Marie, known more commonly as Wheaton to close friends and family, was born on May 29, 1943 to Dieuvielle and Agnes Proulx (now Fanfan). The second oldest of six siblings, he was fondly nicknamed “Lucky,” (pronounced Lukey). Mr. Prou was an alumnus of both the University of Pittsburgh and of the University of Massachusetts Boston.

From his native country Haiti, he initially moved to Washington DC, then to Pittsburgh, eventually settling in Boston, where he spent the rest of his life as a longtime resident for over 30 years, living in several neighborhoods, including Jamaica Plain, Brighton, and Dorchester, where he last lived and worked as an accountant and bookkeeper at Sovereign Bank.

He is described by loved ones as a very well-read and highly intellectual man with many talents–a true jack of all trades, who regularly mastered vast amounts of knowledge with little effort. Wheaton had an immense love of  books, travel, writing, soccer, kompa music, and Haitian cuisine..

In addition to accounting, he was successful in many careers over his lifetime. In Haiti, he taught Latin and Greek at a local university, and also practiced law as an attorney, who fervently and ferociously defended the rights of his clients, before he immigrated to the United States.

His most notable role, was that of a beloved father of three—Farah Prou, 36 of Haiti, Jean Prou Jr, 30 of California, and Maricel Prou, 25, of Lower Mills, who dedicated herself to her father in his final years. . His most enjoyed profession was as a grandfather of five, who were his most prized possessions. He loved nothing more than receiving pictures and visits from his grandchildren. : He will be most remembered for his keen intellect and love of knowledge, his strong will and passionate nature, but above all, a loving dad and grandfather, who treasured his offspring and descendants, that carry his legacy, which will live forever through them and the spiritual riches they inherited and will share with humanity to inspire growth, strength, wisdom, charity, and love.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Gregory’s Church, Saturday, Oct. 19 at 10 o’clock.  Visiting hours at the Church from 9 – 10 am. Interment Cedar Grove Cemetery, Dorchester.

Mary Leigh (Marchand) Feloney, from Milton, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family,  Tuesday October 15, 2013.  Beloved wife of John A. Feloney, Jr., mother of Mary Leigh Sullivan of Milton, John A. Feloney III, of South Weymouth, Thomas E. Feloney and Peter J. Feloney both of Milton.  Grandmother of John IV, Laura, Nicholas, Christine, Ritchie, Colleen, Patrick, Leigh, Kate, Lucy, Molly, Ryan, Taylor and Dylan.  Daughter of the late Edgar and Eleanor (McGrath) Marchand.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Elizabeth Church, Reedsdale Road, Milton, Friday October 18 at 11:00 AM.  Relatives and friends invited.  Interment Milton Cemetery.  Visiting hours private.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mary Leigh’s name to Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905, www.stjude.org.  

Epsie Y. “Bonnie” Maddrey

Bonnie was born on December 21, 1950 in Portsmouth, Virginia she was third eldest daughter to the late Fannie R. Maddrey and Williams Taylor. She came to Boston in 1957 and attended GirlsHigh   School.  She worked as a sales associate at the Salvation Army.  She was a volunteer at Eastern Service Workers Association. She worked at W.A.I.T.T. House. She love children and she babysat all her nieces and nephews, neighborhood and friends children. She was a loving caring person and anyone who came to know her loved her.  She loved talking on the phone, you tell her to call back in 5 or 10 minutes or even hour she would call you back on that minute or hour promptly.  She was dedicated and obsessed with Michael Jackson, wrestling, puzzles and card games. Her favorite color was red she called it million dollar red. She leaves to mourn her sons Ramon and Marlon Maddrey of Boston, her grandchildren Ramon, DeShaun, Ashley, Ramara and great grandchild LaZias. Her best friend Serena and Cousin Linda. Her siblings Mabel, late William, Larry of Decatur, Georgia, Vivian Jones, Ronald, late Patricia, Lillie, Shelina, Maria and Sabrina Maddrey all of Boston, MA and host of relatives and friends.

Although absent from the body and present with the Lord the memory of your spirit will always be in our hearts its goodbye for now – but not forever.

Visiting Hours will be from 10 – 12 Weds. in the Bethel Baptist Church, 18 St. James St., Roxbury, MA. Service will follow at noon. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Hyde Park.

Dorothy Verne Johnson Henry

Dorothy Henry, a longtime resident of Greenwich, CT and Edgartown, MA passed away on October 9th. She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Henry was born on June 15th, 1930, to Howard Deering Johnson and his wife, Dorothy. Her father was the founder of the restaurant chain Howard Johnson’s ,recognized as the largest restaurant chain in the world throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s. Mr. Johnson started the business with single soda fountain in 1925.

Mrs. Henry was educated at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, MA before continuing on to Briarcliffe Junior College and the New York School of Interior Design. Mrs. Henry’s greatest passion was her family. Her two sons, William and Joshua were her greatest sources of pride and devotion. Throughout her life she served on many boards and committees, including the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich and the board of Tabor Academy. She also served as the director of the Howard Johnson Foundation for many years.

She loved to socialize, and was a hostess without equal. She will be remembered as a woman who held her door open for friends and family, as she delighted in bringing people together.  She enjoyed memberships of the Jupiter Island Club, the Field Club of Greenwich, the Colony Club of New York City, and perhaps her favorite, the Edgartown Yacht Club, where she organized dances and was formerly the head of senior entertainment and a member of the House Committee.

Mrs. Henry was an avid traveler throughout her life, visiting countless countries while delighting in taking her growing family of children and grandchildren with her. Though a resident of Greenwich, CT, she shared a deep love for Martha’s Vineyard, where she summered for over fifty years. She was a lover of culture, rare antiques, and beautiful interiors, with her taste greatly influenced by her travels and studies. Her attention to detail, gracious hospitality and devotion to style will be her legacy for many years to come.

Mrs. Henry was deeply beloved and is survived by her brother, Howard Brennan Johnson and his family, her two sons, William and Joshua, her daughters in law, Olivia and Christine, her six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, though many more thought of “Dottie” as family as well.

A private graveside service for family will be held in Milton, MA in the coming week. A memorial gathering is scheduled for next summer in Edgartown, MA.In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Henry had wished for donations to be made in her memory to the Boys and Girls Club of the donor's choice.

She was a true force of nature and the very definition of what a matriarch should be. She will be terribly missed.
