Gloria A. Athanas of Weymouth and formerly of Hyde Park passed away on September 10, 2014.  Beloved daughter of the late Eraclis and Mary Athanas. Sister of the late Paul Athanas. Gloria is also survived by an uncle, aunts, cousins, nephews and many friends.  A  Funeral Service will be held in the Holy Trinity Albanian Orthodox Church, 245 D Street, South Boston, Monday, September 15 at 11 o’clock. Destin Williams- Marcelin in his 7th year, of Boston passed away suddenly September 4, 2014.  Destin was the loving son of Nancy Williams and the late  Patrick Marcelin. Anna M. Harrington , 96, a lifelong resident of Dorchester,  died  on Saturday, September 6, 2014.   She was the beloved daughter of the late  James B. and Annie M. (Burns) Harrington.    Cousin of Veronica Carter, Madeline Dodge, James Honohan, John Honohan, Joseph Hanohan and the late  Shirley Kaddy, Virginia Adams, and James Harrington.  Dear friend of Virginia Wieman.

Shongi Fernandes

Fernandes_Shongi for website onlyShongi Fernandes was born October 7, 1989, in Boston MA., to Maria Barros and Felisberto Fernandes. Shongi could

accomplish anything he set his mind to do. At a very early  age Shongi wanted to be independent and self sufficient.

Shongi, graduated from Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology with a degree in Sheet Metal Work. He worked

for the Sheet metal work with the local 17 and was loved by his coworkers, and supervisors.

 

He was a very loving, and devoted father to his son  Armani Fernandes, a wonderful brother to his siblings,  a perfect son to his parents, and a great friend.

His interests included family gathering, music, movies, and he devoted a lot of his time taking care of his son.

Shongi Fernandes is survived by his mother, Maria Milcent; father Felisberto Fernandes; brother Adilson Barros; sister

Erika Pereira; and his young son Armani Fernandes.

Joseph F. DiFilippo

Joseph F. DiFilippo, 101, of Milton passed away on September 4th.  Beloved husband of the late Theresa (Bertorelli) DiFilippo.  Loving father of Anne Basiliere and her husband Robert of Hanover.  Also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces with whom he shared many wonderful and happy memories.  Joseph was a World War II Army veteran and a Bronze Star recipient.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Gregory’s Church, 2223 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester on Monday at 11 A.M.  Relatives and friends invited.  Visiting hours will be held in the Dolan-Chapman Funeral Home, 5 Canton Avenue, MILTON VILLAGE prior to the service from 9:00 – 10:30 A.M.  Interment Milton Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers a donation in  Joseph’s name may be made to The Lawrence M. Robert “Bob” E. Rooney

Robert E. Rooney, 88, currently from Scituate, MA and Naples FL,  formerly from Danvers and Milton, MA, died suddenly at South Shore Hospital on Friday, August 29th, 2014 surrounded by his large and loving family. Bob was the beloved husband and devoted partner to Jayne (Greer, Joyce) Rooney for the past 34 years.

Born on December 2, 1925, he was the son of the late William and Margaret Rooney of Danvers, MA, and brother of the late William Rooney and infant sister Mary.

Bob is survived by his children with his former wife, Janet (Larkin) Rooney, Linda and George Armstrong of So. Dennis, MA,  Allan and Patricia Rooney of Danvers and Grafton, MA,  Janet and Paul LeDuc of Hopkinton, MA and Cecile Rooney of New Milford, CT the wife of Bob’s son, the late Robert M Rooney.  Bob also leaves behind 5 step-children and their spouses who he loved dearly, Nancy and Reed Panasiti, of Amherst, N.H., Donna and Bob Viau of Gloucester, MA, John and Laura Joyce of Westborough, MA, Patty and Christopher Lamb of Milton, MA and Timothy Joyce of Walpole, MA. Bob also leaves 19 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. All of whom he loved and looked forward to seeing at his annual family reunions.

Born and raised in Danvers Bob graduated with the class of 1943. He was a WW II Army Veteran and was stationed in France until returning to Danvers in 1945. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  His distinguished professional career includes 32 years working for RCA/GE in Burlington, MA before his retirement in 1987.

Bob was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and served as Committee Chairman for his son’s Troops 58 and 155. He was a devout Catholic and was involved as a communicant at St. Mary’s and St. Richard’s Churches in Danvers.

As a devoted father to his children, Bob shared his love for the outdoors. He enjoyed an active lifestyle of mountain climbing, cross country skiing, skating at the Meadow and swimming at the Danvers YMCA .

Bob loved his hometown of Danvers where he lived for 63 years before moving to Milton. He later divided his time between Scituate and Florida with his wife Jayne where they enjoyed retirement traveling, gardening and golfing. He leaves many friends in Naples at the Countryside Golf Community.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Adams Street at Brook Road, Milton, Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 10:00 AM.  Relatives and friends invited.  Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., EAST MILTON, Tuesday, 3:30-7:30 PM.  Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Danvers.

Most of all, Bob will be remembered for the man he was, both a gentleman and gentle man. He held traditional values and enjoyed the simple things in life. He was a family man of immense integrity and moral fiber, respectful, honest and kind. His quiet unassuming generosity and giving spirit will be remembered and missed. In keeping with Bob’s charitable nature donations would be welcome in leiu of flowers to the Boy Scouts of America, Yankee Clipper Council, 36 Amsbury Road, Haverhill, MA 01830  or to Dr. Hyman’s Alzheimer Research Project at Massachusetts  General Hospital,c/o Development Office, 55 Fruit St. Boston, MA  02115

James Lee Simmons, Sr.

 

A resident of Mattapan, MA, James Lee Simmons, Sr.  was born February 23, 1940 to the late Clyde and Rosa (Bell) Simmons.

James (Jim) attended the Lenoir County public school system and graduated from the Woodington High School in Kinston, North Carolina before moving to Boston in 1962.  A man who loved to work and a passion to support his family, worked for Capital Tire (GoodYear) Company in Roxbury, MA; The (MBTA) Ride in Somerville, MA; and  Museum of Fine Arts in Avon, where he was employed before becoming ill in 2013.

On Thursday, August 28, 2014 , while in the home, God called him to his eternal rest. To know Jim, was to love him. Although he will not be with us in the flesh, the wonderful memories that we have of him will forever remain in our hearts.

He leaves a legacy of love and admiration to a devoted wife, Mrs. Mary Simmons of the home. Two sons: DeGary Simmons of Braintree, MA and James Simmons Jr. of Philadelphia, PA. Three daughters: Lawanda Simmons of Kinston, North Carolina; Theresa Simmons of Dorchester, MA and Subrena Simmons of Boston, MA. One daughter-in-law Celica of Braintree, MA; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; Three step-sons: Stephen Weathers of Brockton, MA; Larry Weathers of Brockton, MA  and Jerome Adams of Brockton, MA and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He also leaves behind to cherish: One brother, Leonard Simmons  and his wife Mamie of Mount Vernon, NY; Two  sisters: Ida Williams  and her husband Ishmon and Bertha Hines of Kinston, North Carolina.

Funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 2,  2014 at Noon, at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington St. DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS.  Visitation will be held one hour  prior 11:00-Noon.  Interment Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston.
