Paul E. Hastings, of Dorchester and Quincy, died September 15, 2020.

Born April 10,1959, he was raised in Dorchester and graduated from Hyde Park High School.

Paul worked at Berger Instruments as a machinist. He also worked as a maintenance worker at the Colonial Nursing Home in Weymouth. He enjoyed working at the Boston Globe as a mailer for many years until the Globe transferred to Taunton. Paul spent several years caring for his parents in their home. His last job was working at a local gas station.

Paul loved living in Dorchester and looked forward to the Annual Dorchester Day parade. He loved watching the Patriots, connecting with family and friends on Facebook, walking in the neighborhood and buzzing around on his motorized scooter. He was an active member of Saint Gregory’s Parish.

Paul was the devoted father of Paul Hastings of Quincy.  Beloved brother of Ben Hastings of Washington D.C., Rhonda Astrella of Dorchester, Sharon Carr of Braintree, Melanie Procaccino of Sandwich, Tara Healy of Quincy and the late Mary Tamberg.  Son of the late Paul J. and Anita (Ivoskus) Hastings.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Jean M. Mara, of Milton, formerly of Quincy, daughter of the late John and Marie Mara passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on September 21, 2020.

Jean is survived by her extended family, Ann Louise and Dan Sullivan, their children and grandchildren as well as her St. Agatha Community family, Holy Cross Retreat House family, E.C. Week family and anyone who was blessed enough to call her a friend.

Jean was an active member of the St. Agatha Parish community as she was a teacher at St. Agatha School for 37 years starting in 1980. One of her many joys during her teaching career was accompanying the 8^th grade class on the yearly trip to Washington D.C. Many will tell you that Jean was far more than a teacher at St. Agatha School. She was a role model, mentor, friend, and advocate which was evident at the school wide event “Mara Strong Day” where she was honored by past and present students, teacher, and families when she was first diagnosed with cancer. Additionally, she was a member of the RCIA program welcoming new members into our faith community. Jean spent many hours volunteering her time and sharing her faith in multiple communities including My Brother’s Keeper, the Holy Cross Retreat House, and Camp Fatima’s E.C. Week where she served as relief counselor to individuals with special needs for over 20 years. To know Jean was to have a faithful friend, quick with a joke and a kind word. Her contagious laugh could fill a room and warm your heart. She will be deeply missed by all who know and love her. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, 432 Adams Street, Milton, Monday September 28 at 10:30 am. Colin F. MacDonald, Jr., D.M.D., 91, of Milton and Westwood, a longtime Quincy dentist, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on June 15, 2020.

Colin was a graduate of LaSalle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island and was awarded a full scholarship to his beloved University of Notre Dame from which he was graduated cum laude in 1950.  He then went on to graduate from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1954.  After completing his schooling, he served in Norfolk, Virginia as a lieutenant in the United States Navy.

An avid sports enthusiast, Colin spent innumerable hours enjoying his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting and school events. An accomplished pianist, Colin played for countless hours entertaining his family and friends at holiday gatherings. Many of his patients became good friends and he will always be remembered for his keen intellect, his love of family, his kindness and his sense of humor.

Colin was the cherished son of Colin F. and Adelaide MacDonald. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mae (Mary Nee).  He is the loving father of Mary E. (Richard Quincy), Deborah M. (Jeffrey Marr), the late Colin F. MacDonald, III, Stephen P. MacDonald, D.M.D. (Andrea F.) and Patricia A. (Dale Boch).  Affectionately known as “Pa”, Colin is the cherished grandfather of Richard Quincy, Jr., Esq. (Eliza L.), Laura Q. Gagne (Eric), Jeffrey Marr, Jr. (Alexandra R.), Katherine M. Marr, Nicole C., Alexis F. and Brenna M. MacDonald and Rebecca M. Boch. He is also the loving great grandfather of Aidan Gagne and Louisa and Hannah Quincy.  He will be sorely missed by all his extended family, friends and former patients.

Lyann Kayla Berrios, 26, of Boston died unexpectedly Sunday September 13, 2020, just one day shy of her 27^th birthday. 

Born September 14, 1993, in Boston, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Angel Luis Berrios and Lydia E. Berrios (Gonzalez). 

She attended the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Schools in Hyde Park, MA and completed the Pharmacy Technician program at JVS in Boston.   She went on to work for Walgreen’s pharmacy and most recently Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston for the past 4 years. 

Lyann was a naturally shy and quiet person who grew into a stunningly beautiful, kind-hearted, adventurous, loving, forgiving, and faithful friend, daughter, sister, niece and “Titi”.  She was the biggest cheerleader to those she loved.  She also loved traveling, music, and animals.

Those who knew her, knew her greatest joy was her 2-year-old nephew Benjamin.  Lyann made trips to visit him and her family in Vermont every couple of weeks, sometimes twice in the same week.  They enjoyed their daily facetime calls, selfies, and snapchat videos together. 

Lyann leaves behind her loving mother, Lydia E. Berrios of Montpelier, VT, brother Benjamin E. Jones II (Katie) VT, brother Angel L. Berrios (Annette) PA, brother Wendell Berrios (Tania) PA,  brother Archie Vazquez (Jennifer) RI, sister Jahaira Melendez (Felix) PA, sister Karen Morales (Victor) NY.  She also leaves behind her special Titi’s, Rosa Phillips, Lala Ramirez, Ana Pomales, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her father Angel Luis Berrios, her paternal and maternal grandparents.

While the heartache of Lyann’s passing will never heal, we ask that you remember her by her kindness, her sweet smile, and her love of living in the moment.  In her honor, “in a world where you can be anything, be kind”.

Paul J. Kobzik, of Quincy, died unexpectedly, Friday September 18, 2020.

Born in Stoneham and raised in Medford, Paul graduated from Medford High School. He was a tile setter by trade and owned and operated Cubby Tile for the last ten years.

Paul loved to spend time at the beach, particularly Nantasket Beach and the beaches of New Hampshire and visited Arlington Pond in New Hampshire every summer. He was an avid New England sports fan. He particularly enjoyed spending time with family, specifically his nieces and nephews.

Beloved husband of Patricia M. (Rouillard) Kobzik. Loving son of the late Stanley and Anastasia (Strecha) Kobzik. Brother of John Kobzik and his wife Donna of Windham, NH and Peter Kobzik and his wife Debra of SC. Son-in-law of the late Theodore and June (Cantelli) Rouillard. Brother-in-law of Debra and her husband George Elder of Quincy and the late Teddy Rouillard. Paul is survived by his nieces, nephews, friends and his purebred chihuahua Oliver.

Michael Anthony Crittenden of Dorchester died on September 16, 2020.

Beloved companion of April Williams of Dorchester. Loving father of Makita Williams-Crittenden of Somerville, Michael and Melissa Crittenden both of Dorchester. Brother of Mounier Jones. Grandfather of Malik, Malia and Mila.

Michael was born and raised in Boston. He had a love for basketball and enjoyed playing whenever he could. Michael had a large social circle with many friends. Most of all Michael loved his family who were the most important aspect of his life. He will be missed by many family and friends who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be on Thursday September 25th from 10-11am in the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, Dorchester Lower Mills. A Private service will follow in the funeral home at 11am. Cremation will follow.

Robert C. Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother departed this life on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at his residence in Boston, MA at the age of 69.  Robert was known affectionately as “Bobcat” by family and friends. He was appreciated for his warm smile, sense of humor, singing and his love for family.

Bobcat was born on June 27,1951 in Roxbury MA and he was the only child of the beloved Avis Smith. Robert’s mom passed at an early age and he was raised by his bonus mom Beverly Dawn where he became one of seven children to Beverly and Edward Dawn (deceased).

Bobcat grew up in Roxbury, MA and attended the Phillip Brooks elementary school where he developed a love for basketball, swimming, baseball and track. In his young adult life Bobcat spent a great deal of time in pool rooms where he began hanging with the wrong crowd and made some bad decisions which caused him to spend many years in and out of incarceration. While incarcerated Bobcat obtained his GED.  Bobcat was an avid Boston Celtics and New England Patriots fan and he enjoyed watching the games with family and friends.  

In 2001 Bobcat was given an opportunity as a delivery driver at Community Servings, Inc. where he worked 16 years and was a family member of CS for 22 years. He provided healthy meals to individuals with critical life threatening illnesses. Bobcat was very proud to be a part of the CS team and loved having the opportunity to “give back”.  In 2005 Bobcat was awarded the “Community Spirit” award from Coldwell Banker and he was very proud of this big achievement.  Everyone grew to love Bobcat for his singing, smile, his willingness to help everyone and his kind spirit.

It was at Community Servings where Bobcat met his “best friend” and wife Carolyn of 17 years. Bobcat often bragged that it was Carolyn that influenced his life changes. Bobcat and Carolyn shared a love for traveling, hanging out with friends and family and listening to music.  Bobcat truly was a gift from God to the world and he will be missed, immeasurably by so many.

Bobcat leaves his spirit to carry on with his wife Carolyn Smith, his children Shanita Lane (Horton) of New Jersey, Evelyn Monteiro, Alicia Wilson, Khaliah Horton, Charles Monteiro, Keith Wilson, Dominic Horton, Krystle Williams and Larry Williams all of Boston MA. Survived by eight grandchildren; Lovell Mumford Jr, Brittany Alston, Keith Wilson Jr., Jayla Wilson, Dominic I. Horton, Jordan Sims, Kennedi Horton and Raelynn Williams. Mother Beverly Dawn and Siblings Richard Smith, Kevin Smith, Edward Dawn, Beverly Dawn, James Dawn and Wayne Dawn all of Boston MA.  Bobcat also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Virginia M. Shelsey, of Milton, September 17, 2020.

Born in Boston, Virginia was a graduate of Boston University and a longtime administrator for the Boston Public Schools.

Daughter of the late Thomas M. and Elena M. (O’Brien) Shelsey. Sister of the late Anne M. Shelsey.

Eugenia Gomes of Dorchester, died September 15, 2020, at the age of 91.

Born in Fogo, Cape Verde, she was the wife of the late Filipe Gomes.  Eugenia was the beloved mother of Ana Pina, Maria Mendes, Sara Gomes, Maria Fernandes, Marta Gomes, Martinho Gomes, Maria Gomes, Jose Gomes, Licinio Gomes, Eliseo Gomes, Alirio Gomes and Miguel Gomes. She is also survived by many grandchildren.

Maria Barros, also known as “Fatuca,” passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 surrounded by family.

She was born on October 18^th 1952 in Fogo, Cape Verde, She was the daughter of late Joana DaSilva and Cesar Barros. She was married to Valdemiro Mendes (Deceased) on June 16^th 1973.

Fatuca started her devotion of loving and helping others at a very young age when she became a teacher at the age of 17.  She became “ Professora” to so many kids who still love her until this day. She treated all her students like she would treat her own inside and outside her classroom. She was an educator and a community leader throughout her life.

Fatuca is described as a strong, selfless woman, with an immense amount of love for others and Life.

Those who spent time with her, quickly gravitated towards her warm spirit; She welcomed everyone with a big smile and open arms.

It was evident from the very beginning of her life that she was destined to be a warrior and a survivor, like her mother.

Fatuca was always kind and willing to give her last to help others and made sure everyone around her was Happy.  Fatuca was also not the one to be messed with, She was strong physically and mentally, she stood up for herself and others in any situation, she worked hard to provide and protect the ones she loved.

Fatuca will forever be remembered for the love she had for her children specially her “kode Gemeas”. She would call all 9 of them Every single day to simply say “I love you”. Sometimes she would call one of us twice because she forgot who she had called first.  I think we would all agree when Jay (daughter) says “She was perfect for me, she was my best friend and always had my back.”

She enjoyed laughing, cooking, decorating, knitting, and spending quality time with those that meant the world to her. Those that knew her, knew she loved getting dolled up and dancing around the room to the beat of her own tune.

Her energy was powerful. She was a devoted catholic. She modeled what it meant to have faith and never give up and to always be there for others until her very last day.

Fatuca went home to Jesus on September 15, 2020, while surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

She leaves behind her 6 sisters, her 6 daughters, 3 sons, (Delmira, Mira, Valdemar Jay, Lisa, Valdir, Erky, Mena and Mona) and 12 grandchildren.

Her life truly embodies Proverbs 22:6, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

Visiting Hours will be held at the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington St., DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS on Thursday, September 17 from 5-9PM. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Patrick Church.
