Emilia Alves

Loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Emilia Alves, age 84, of Boston, passed into God’s hands while vacationing in her home country of Fogo, Cape Verde on August 27, 2013.  Emilia was born June 7, 1929, in town of Luzia Nunes Fogo where she was known as “Zizinha”.  She had two sisters, Lurdes (Luta) and Dulce De Barros and nine brothers, Paulo Alves (Papa), Daniel Alves, Severino Barros (Pazin), Aguinaldo Barros (Nana), Jose Barbosa (Josezinho), Bartalumeo Barbosa (Julinho), Carlos Barbosa (Tchitchi) and Valdumiro Barbosa.  She married and had seven children, two boys and five girls.  She is survived by her sons Antonio Goncalves (Djedjinho) and Joao Goncalves (Ady) and daughters Maria de Fatima Cabral (Fatima di Milia) and Maria Augusta Goncalves (Guta di Milia).  She is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.  She was a wonderful example of strength, wisdom and unconditional love.

Emilia was never afforded the opportunity to attend school in her youth, but that never stopped her from learning to read and write her name and knowing all the numbers and her alphabets at her senior age.  It was one of her biggest dreams being able to sign her own name and she would proudly sign her own documents wherever she goes and spent hours upon hours trying to perfect her signature.  Emilia moved to Boston in 1992 to be reunited with her two youngest children Fatima and Ady hence establishing her new home in here in Boston.  She enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, music and dancing.  She made many friends and enjoyed telling old tales about her beloved home country and family heritage.  She was quite an historian.  To Emilia, family was her everything and she believed that “the family is the link to our past and bridge to our future”.  The world has lost a great woman, but she leaves behind an enduring family legacy and beautiful memories.  May her struggles and success in life serve as inspiration to all who knew her.  To her family and friends, our hearts are torn knowing that she is no longer here with us in person but in our hearts, the great memories of her shall last an eternity.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 4th in Saint Patrick’s Church, 10 Magazine Street, Roxbury at 10 A.M.  Visiting hours will be held in the Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS, on Tuesday from 5-9 P.M.  Interment Cedar Grove Cemetery.
