Sarita Pereira

Pereira, sarita for website only

After a prolonged illness that accelerated in her last few days, Dr. Sarita Ann Pereira passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 14, 2014, in Boston, surrounded by family. As a deeply religious person, she was blessed by four priests—all of who were friends to her—and who provided the Blessing of the Sick and Last Rites. Sarita is survived by her parents—Bertie and Hazel Pereira; and her siblings—Mark Pereira (Amy), Pramila Charpentier (Dean), and Brian Pereira (Angela). She was favorite auntie to Danielle, Lauren, Nigel, Neil, Natasha, Brynn, Darcy, Natalie and Dash and the godmother to Ashwin.

A memorial is planned for Saturday, January 17, 2014 at 2 PM at the Shrine of St. Anthony (Boston) followed by a reception at 3PM at The Kensington (665 Washington St, Boston). In lieu of flowers, Sarita asked that donations be made to: American Liver Foundation (www.liverfoundation.org/howtohelp) and to the Gift of Life (www.donors1org/about-us/contribute). (Sarita’s family will also hold a private service for her in April around her birthday.)

The family would like to share some highlights of her life at her memorial services. We encourage you to share your memories of your time with Sarita, and what she meant to you in the Guest Book below.

Sarita loved her work, loved her faith, loved her family and lived life to the fullest. As a PhD in molecular biology, she had an illustrious career driven by the desire to help others through her research. Most recently she was the Global Director of Regulatory Affairs at Novartis in Boston, where she leaves several close colleagues. Having worked previously for AstraZeneca, Purdue Pharma, Ikaria, and Magainin Pharmaceuticals, she leaves behind colleagues in Boston, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Sweden and Denmark. We rest assured that her contribution to the field of medicine has and will benefit millions.

Wherever Sarita lived, she sought out friends who became her extended family, and with many of them she traveled to Eastern Europe, Israel, Scandinavia, Mexico, and throughout the U.S. Sarita was overjoyed to have traveled with friends to visit four sacred places: Medjugorje, Lourdes, Guadalupe, and the Holy Land.

We knew Sarita for being intelligent, warm-hearted, quirky, and thoughtful. She was the best gift-giver in our family. We all loved her, and will miss her very much.

Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and support through this difficult time.

Joanne Clair Peckarsky

jojo websiteprogram 001Joanne Clair Peckarsky (Jo) was born in Milwaukee, WI on April 30, 1944 and died in Boston, MA on December 19, 2014 surrounded by her loving family.  She received a degree in Physical Therapy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1966 and immediately moved to Boston where she touched hundreds, if not thousands of people with her legendary generosity and giving spirit.  Her first and most-loved job as a physical therapist was at Boston City Hospital, where she eventually worked in their long-term care facility, Mattapan, where she realized her passion to help elderly people stay in their homes and be independent.  Before she retired she worked at the Boston Visiting Nurses’ Association, and after retirement continued to visit patients with whom she had developed lasting bonds.  She was a staunch supporter of community, especially in her neighborhood of Dorchester Lower Mills where she promoted local business not only by using them herself, but also by spreading the word to others.  Her passion for helping other people was unequalled, manifest by giving of her time and supporting a massive list of local and global charities.

Besides family and friends, her biggest passions were scuba diving and under water photography.  She has taken thousands of spectacular photos, which adorn the walls of many of our homes and have been recognized by awards and displayed in the local dive shops and the New England Aquarium.  She had an uncanny eye for photographic composition, and neutral buoyancy second to none, no matter how large the camera she was toting.  She was happiest in her under water world where she never became complacent about the wonders of ocean critters.  Her joy under water was unparalleled and her sense of humor and adventure were best personified in her practice of scuba diving in a pink evening gown, which is documented in the photo accompanying this tribute.  Late in life she also took up yoga, in which she found a new peace and spirit.  She put the younger Yogi’s to shame with her perfectly aligned unassisted headstand that she first accomplished on her 70th birthday.

She is survived by her devoted friend and companion of 36 years, Elissa Menconi, and her Boston family, Sandra and Edmund Sheehan and their daughters, Katherine (Sheehan) Gentile (Robert Gentile) and Sarah Sheehan; and her Wisconsin family, brother James Peckarsky and sister Bobbi Peckarsky (Steve Horn) and their children, Alison Peckarsky Horn and Bryan Peckarsky Horn (Carrie Horn) and her grand-niece, London Horn.  She will be greatly missed by everyone she touched, but she will forever be on our shoulders, guiding us and loving us as we continue our journeys.  Namaste Jo.

Martha B. Wilhelm-Brandon

Brandon, Martha photo for website only

Martha (Bishop) Wilhelm-Brandon, “Marti”, of Weymouth passed away on Wednesday, December 3rd after a long illness. Beloved wife of Michael Brandon.  Marti had a long career as stable owner, horse trainer and premier riding instructor, a result of her lifelong love of horses.

She received a BS from Stephens College, a BA and MA in Journalism from Boston University, and then became a flight attendant for Pan American Airlines for ten years, traveling all over the world. During this time she married Larry Sorensen, a pilot with Pan Am. Marti then returned to Sandwich on Cape Cod where she worked with her aunt who ran The Greenbriar Nature Preserve.  This was to slow a pace for her.  She then moved to Iowa and opened Harmony Hollow Stables, becoming a trainer and equitation instructor.  Marti presented horses meticulously and ensured that the riders always did the work themselves; the level of her standards only was exceeded by her insistence on self-reliance.  Her students have gone on to compete and to win at the national and international levels, and some are still doing so today.  After a terrible snowstorm destroyed her barns she moved east and settled in Atlanta, founding Greenbriar Stables continuing to train & show.  She soon returned to the show ring with her beloved Saddlebred IceTea and began winning everything in sight.  After the death of her second husband, she remained at the stables and was joined by Carole Downs.  As a team they showed and won many ribbons over the years.

At the 47th high school reunion in 2008, she met Michael Brandon, her high school beau, once again and then married shortly after in Key West.  In late 2012, a brain tumor was discovered.  She had it removed in GA & shortly after relocated to the Boston area, to be with Michael.  She continued to have cancer treatments.  Her beloved horses Rudy & Hopper (a world champion) were boarded in nearby Duxbury where she continued to ride & drive them.

Marti was more than an instructor to her students and time spent at her stable was never considered ”work.”  She was a mentor, an inspiration and a role model for professionalism and sportsmanship.  Above all, she had a magnetic life force that drew people to her.  Her infectious love of “the beasts,” as she called them, inspired love of horses to her students and dear lifelong friendships among those in her “horse family.”

A memorial service will be at Thayer Academy in the Spring & at the Greenbriar Nature Preserve.  A donation in Marti’s name may be made to Thayer Academy, 745 Washington Street, Braintree, MA 02184 or by visiting www.thayer.org as well as to The Thorton Burgess Society, 6 Discovery Hill Road, East Sandwich, MA 02537 or by visiting www.thortonburgess.org.
