Dr. Marius M. Solomon, 61, of Milton, MA peacefully passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.

He is survived by his adoring daughters, Hannah N. Solomon and Arielle M. Solomon, and former wife and girls’ mother, Janine A. Solomon, all of Milton, MA.  He is also survived by his first cousin and her family of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Born on February 2, 1955, in Bucharest, Romania, he was the beloved son of the late Dr. Osias Solomon and the late Ileana (Zanfirescu) Solomon.  Dr. Solomon was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, where he received his Ph.D. in Decisions Sciences (1984), MA in Dynamical Systems, and BA in Mathematics (University of Pennsylvania, 1977).  He spent his entire professional career as a Professor in the Information, Operations and Analysis Group at Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts.  He was fluent in five languages, enjoyed traveling, cooking, art, music, was an avid sports fan, and loved to coach and watch his daughters play soccer.

Relatives, friends, and colleagues are cordially invited to attend a Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Milton, 495 Canton Avenue, Milton, MA.  A light lunch/reception for a time of fellowship and remembrance will follow the Service.

Boston sculptor Joe Wheel­wright died on the evening of September 28 after a deter­mined but peaceful struggle with cancer. He was 68. He died in the candlelight at his home in Dorchester, attended by his wife and two daughters.

A longtime shaper of stone and wood, Joe co-founded the Bos­ton Sculptors Gallery and the Humphreys Street Studios, two important collaboratives for lo­cal artists. His own work was daring in scale–his pieces could be monumental or miniature–and was wryly imaginative. His best-known public art is “Sleep­ing Moon” at Peabody Square, Dorchester. At the DeCordova Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Joe carved a boulder into a great inquisitive head, one ear cocked to the ground, which he called “Listening Stone.”

Joe was a provocative and pithy man, fond of quoting his rela­tive Henry Thoreau. Although he lived in the private world of the artist, he had an ex­traordinary number of friends, whose affection he gracefully returned. Apart from his un­wavering love for his wife, Susan, Joe reserved his deep­est feelings for New England’s rocks and trees and, above all, for the moon, which had fasci­nated him since childhood.

Mildred “Millie” Ammidown, 91, of Quincy, passed Tuesday at Colonial Nursing Center in Weymouth, after fighting a long battle to remain with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sister Florence (Ammidown) Kinsella of Atlantic Highlands, NJ. She joins her mother Laura (Davis) Ammidown along with her brothers Albert, Warren and Earl “Buddy” Ammidown who all served our country in WWII. Her sister, Marilyn (Ammidown) Miller also welcomes her with open arms.

There are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins all over the country who love and remember her as “Auntie Millie.”

Her greatest joys came from her Quincy neighbors who always looked out for her. Marie and Pat O’Callaghan, Estelle Weinberger, Lorraine and Ritchie Fabrizio, and Joan Malvesti who was a blessing at the end.

Visiting hours will be held Friday morning 10 – 12 in the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Ave., MILTON. Interment private.

Ruth Juanita Harrell Brown, daughter of the late Willis Harrell and the late Hazel Young Harrell was born on February 24, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland. She departed this life peacefully on September 27, 2016 surrounded by her family. Ruth attended Baltimore Public Schools. Noticing a spark in their niece’s eyes to continue her education, her aunt and uncle the late William and Lula Young brought her to Boston to continue her education at Boston State Teacher’s College where she received her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Education. While attending college she met her lifelong friend Edith Brown Elder who introduced her to her brother Korean War Veteran Warren I. Brown. From this meeting, Warren and Ruth were married and out of this union two children were born Cheryl Brown-Greene and Karen E. B. Evans. She taught for the Boston Public Schools for 40 years but was particularly proud of her 25 years working as an Advanced Work Class teacher. She won numerous teaching awards and acknowledgements but her proudest teaching award was the Golden Apple Award. She loved her students and she loved teaching Ruth supported many community and civic organizations but was the major benefactor of the Warren I. Brown Memorial Scholarship given yearly to high school students who have participated in community service on Patriots’ Day. A 56-year member of the Massachusetts Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ruth obtained the honor of becoming the Department President for the state of Massachusetts. She was the first African-American woman in Massachusetts to hold this position. She served this organization proudly and many know her for her strong commitment to this country and its veterans. Ruth loved all sports and was a fan of all the Boston teams. She loved to boast that she had traveled almost all of the 50 states through her association with the VFW. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting. Ruth leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters Cheryl Brown-Greene and Karen E. B. Theresa Rose Monteiro was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 11, 1926 to Maria Rose and Manuel Pires.  When she was a small child, she and her sister Virginia  were sent to Cape Verde to be raised by their paternal grandmother.  She lived in Fogo until her mid-twenties when she returned to the United States on the infamous boat, the Madelena.  Theresa came back to America with an urge to “be American”.  She attended night school and learned English very quickly and was eager to experience everything she had missed out on during her years in Cape Verde.  Eventually she met and married Frank Monteiro and they settled down in Dorchester.  Both hard workers, they were able to purchase a home on Harlem Street where she lived for more than 50 years. Theresa worked as a stitcher at B.F. Goodrich for a few years and it was here that she met Isobel Walcott. Their friendship lasted until the day she died (almost 55 years!)  She moved on to Massachusetts General Hospital where she worked in the Nutrition Services department and her job allowed her to meet many celebrities, dignitaries and VIPs.  When she retired after 25 years, she had made many, many friends who would still ask about her 24 years later. Theresa didn’t have many hobbies (she was too busy working and raising her family!) but she did have a few passions:  church every Sunday, Bingo every Monday night, soap operas, movies with friends and  traveling.  She loved telling stories about her trips to Hawaii, Barbados and California.  After she retired, she returned to Cape Verde for the first time since she had left 40 years prior. Theresa leaves behind her loving children Carlos Pires Sr., Fatima “Tina” Pires-DaCruz and her husband Manuel, Cheryl Pires-Taylor, Lynn Monteiro, Virginia Monteiro and Frank Monteiro II and his wife Leocadia who were all at her bedside when she passed; her step-children Maria and Andre Monteiro; her grandchildren Anna Pires, Carlos Pires Jr., Nancy Pires, Arnaldina “Nalda” Finney & her husband Timothy, Melissa Theresa Reed, Frank Monteiro III and his wife Marissa, Erica Taylor, Michelle Sailsman, Isana and  Terŕe Freire and Faith-Virginia Monteiro; and her great-grandchildren Tissa, Christopher, Louis, Adrianna and Savanna Hernandez, Myra Finney, Jayden Sailsman, Payton Whitmore, Caiah Pires, Timothy “TJ” Finney Jr., Sienna Rodriguez and Jordan Campbell.  Nana Theresa had a special bond with and was so proud of her grandkids and great-grands and she will be greatly missed by them all. Steven Sailsman and Theresa’s two godchildren also held a very special place in her heart.  When

speaking of Anthony Bento and Susan Gomes, she would say, “I have the best godchildren in the world!” Theresa was predeceased by her husband Frank, her father and beloved stepmother Manuel and Anna Pires, her sister Virginia Pires, her brothers John Perreira and Eugene Rose, her son Jose “Joey” Freire and her grandson Christopher Pires.  Hopefully they are all enjoying a wonderful reunion! Theresa had too many friends to list here, but she loved and appreciated all of them and as she aged and her memory started to fail, she was very concerned about keeping in touch with everyone.  She had a list of phone numbers and tried to call everyone on it at least once a month. Martin Luther King Jr. said “The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important.”  Theresa was lucky enough to have had both.  She lived almost 90 wonderful years and everyone who knew her will never forget her.

Devoted mother of Carlos Pires of Charlestown, Fatima “Tina” Pires  DaCruz and her husband Manuel of RI, Cheryl Pires-Taylor, Lynn Marie Monteiro & Virginia Monteiro all of Dorchester, Frank V. Monteiro, II and his wife Leocadia of N. Easton and the late Jose M. Freire. Sister  of Manuel Pires of Lynn. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Mark Alan Monday Sr., of Dorchester, formerly of Brookville, Indiana, died surrounded by his loved ones, September 26, 2016.

He was the devoted husband of Nancy (Orlando) Monday, as well as the beloved father of Tarah Monday and her husband Christopher Mandell of Stratford, CT, Samantha, Mark Jr. and James Monday, all of Dorchester. He was preceded in death by his father James Curtis Monday. He is also survived by his mother Itha Bea Monday, brother Stephen Monday and his wife Nancy, as well as his sister Mary Beth Waltz and her husband Kevin. Mark leaves behind many nieces and nephews and was the world’s best son-in-law to Dorothy and the late Joseph Orlando.

Mark spent 11 years as Vice President of Internal Audit at Hasbro Toy Company. He spent much of his time travelling internationally both for business and to enjoy his favorite pastime of golfing on courses all over the world.
