Deidra Graham known to many as Dee , grew up in Clifton Jamaica. As her childhood friend we attended the Clifton Basic School which was part of her formal education. She was a very quiet , obedient and humble friend who got along with Everyone.
She was an attentive Student who under the care of mrs Alice Kerr would sat quietly in the class and listened to the many stories read to us such as Brer Anansi, Little Red Riding Hood and Big Boy. However, it was the biblical stories that helped to shape, mold and groom her into the special, trustworthy, kind- hearted and extraordinary woman she became.
Time waits on no man and as the saying goes in no time Deidra primary education began at the Clifton All -Age School under the Principal ship of Mr Lloyd Heavens. It was during those years that she gained the friendship of many including her adpoted sister Tiny, Cousin Mickey , Dainty,Judith,Jahnice and many others including Tanesha and Michelle . She was never involved in fights nor behaved unruly in any given time in her life. I would often accompanied her to her house during her lunch break where we delighted in the delicious steam potato puddings, her mom used to bake.
Every friday afternoon we went on our little excursions to Askenish where we visited the post office and collected the mails that were eagerly awaiting our arrival. We were a pack then as the bunch of us chatted along the way, sang, played and frolic in whatever amuses us during these trips.Deidra became friends with the Ansine sisters Gail and Faith who were students at the Askenish All – Age School.
Deidra was successful in her Grade Six Common Entrance Examination in the early 90s and was placed at Rusea’s High School, formerly Hanover Secondary.During the time we were faced with severe water crisis, bad road conditions and transportation problems. In the wee hours of the morning we often travelled to Askenish and fetched pipe water whenever there was any available or visited Mass Melton waterhole so we could have water to take our morning bath as well as stopped and ate the juicy mangoes we picked up along the bushes.
It was a challenge in the evenings for us to get home as some of the times the few pickups on the road were away at the famous Dacosta Cup or Oliver Shield Football matches. There were no other alternatives for us but to walk the long miles home.Tired and thirsty we left the town of Lucea with our water and juices as we used the little money for our fares on refreshments. We journeyed to Johnson Town, up a hill called President, through the bushes until we came back on the road that led us to Mt Peace and Clifton. Most of us in the group were girls and we were so afraid because we did not know what danger awaited us in the bushes.
Deidra had a warm and friendly personality and so attracted many students during her high school years.Gail Ansine believe that Deidra was precious and rare, was a very good friend who was very true and faithful. She was very close to Deidra and said they looked out for each other but thinks Deidra looked out for her more.Deidra was also close to Deidre Lawrence, Camille Thomas and Aron Maye who were her classmates while in tenth grade. She was a student who was very passionate about the business aspect of her academics and did not believed in missing classes as time loss could not be regained.
After Deidra migrated to the United States of America she kept in touch with her families and friends. Her friends’ children became her neices and nephews and were often showered with many gifts on her yearly visits to Jamaica. Deidra you will always have a special place in our hearts, your journey is not how we would have wanted it to be but I guess God have other plans for you.
U are someone who cared an love unconditionally I was a beneficiary of ur love an kindness…I would alway look forward to ur messages an ur warm encouragment an the family updates an every thing that keeps a family connected ….R.I.P cuz love u always
Diedre was in her earlier years, a very shy, calm spirited and mannerly individual. Her smile radiated those around her
As a grown up , I saw her seldomly on her visits to the island she called home, We would normally keep in touch via Fb and WhatsApp.She was beauty personified and her mannerism par excellence
She touched the hearts of all those with whom she came in contact physically as well as virtually. A telephone call I got yesterday from a colleague of mine (former V.P. of Spanish Town Primay sch. Jacqui Cameron) bore evidence of this. Shocked and strickened by grief she told me how she has lost a friend whom she has never met in person but who meant so much to her and her tears couldn’t stop from flowing.
They were partners in a particular word game online, but their friendship blossomed as they learnt about each other.
That was the powerful impact of our Deidre Graham.
Sleep in Peace Dee. The great getting up morning is just around the bend.
Condolences to mom Gloria, father Baz, brother Kervin ,children other family members and friends.
You will be dearly miss cous,we would always talk and catch up on family and community issues, nothing was ever beyond topic of discussion.your personality was one all would emulate, you were humble, kind, loving, understanding, sometimes too much(if there is such),a thing, because some would take advantage of your kindness. But that was just you, that was what you were ,a concern and loving person. You would rather give to others and do without.Thank you for being that person,a person who personifies compassion to all.
When you call and say you will be visiting,I know we all will go on adventures with your kids and other friends and family members.
You were the one anyone could go to and talk,no judgements, but a listening ear and good advice.
Love u Dee,will always remember you, because you have left your mark in my life and others,Sleep In Peace my loveππ
