Dr. Robert W. Egan

Robert W. Egan of Milton, MA; “89” passed away November 26, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Born November 9, 1928 to John O’Neil Egan of Dorchester, MA and Mildred (McIssac) of CO, he was married on June 12, 1954 to Mary Ellen (Marlen) Gillis of West Roxbury. They recently celebrated 63 years of marriage.

A 1950 graduate of Boston College and 1954 graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, he served as a doctor in the Army, stationed at Fort Lewis, WA from 1958-1960. Specializing in Neurology he returned to Boston and launched a career that would span over 45 years. He was chief of Neurology at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, the Chief of Staff at Milton Hospital and was on staff at Cardinal Cushing Hospital in Brockton and other hospitals in the Boston area.

Dr. R.W. Egan was a known for his integrity, high ethical standards, insight, individual attention to each patient, and generosity; providing pro bono work for countless patients. He was the lead physician for 8 trips to Lourdes France, via the Lourdes Center in Boston, and certified several healings on the official Lourdes Medical Cures List.

Survived by his faithful caring wife Marlen Egan, and dedicated children, Mary-Ellen Curry of Severna Park, MD; Robert W. Egan Jr. of Hanover, MA; John F. Egan of Moretown, VT; Suzanne Rader of Winchendon MA; Daniel R. Egan of Thornton, NH; Edmund J. (Ned) Egan of Tahoe City, CA; and Michael J. Egan of Kingfield, ME; beloved sister Jean Marie Cull and Thomas Cull of Westlake Village, CA was preceded in death by his loving aunts Dorothea and Florence McLeod of Boston and infant Daniel E. Egan. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Bob believed in faith, family, and friends, as a youth he was a sailing champion in the Snipe Class, as an adult he could be found sailing his wooden Herreshoff 12 ½ throughout Massachusetts Bay. Egan a wooden boat craftsman and a voracious reader was also a passionate skier who skied into his 80s with his children and grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be at St Elizabeth Church Saturday at 11am, 350 Reedsdale Rd, Milton. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home 326 Granite Ave., Milton Friday 4-8pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the Lourdes Center, 698 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02215 and or the Milton Council of Aging, 10 Walnut St, Milton MA 02186.
