Julie T. Downey

Julie T. Downey, of Boston, passed away unexpectedly at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Monday August 14, 2017.

She was born on October 19, 1944 to Maurice and Mary Jane (Schermerhorn) Downey. Julie grew up in Dorchester Lower Mills. She attended St. Gregory Elementary School.   Julie graduated from Saint Gregory High School in 1962 and then went on to continue her education attending Boston City Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with the Class of 1965. She spent many years providing the highest standard of care for others.  Julie was a legendary Nurse Manager (then “Head Nurse”) of the Dowling 4 South Surgical ICU at the old Boston City Hospital for many years. Later she worked for the Boston VNA providing compassionate care for her elderly patients. She was loved and respected by her staff and patients.

In addition to her many years of providing the highest standard of care for her patients, she repeatedly dropped everything to provide that same level of care for her family and friends when needed, which was many times over the years. Long before it was commonplace, Julie was providing hospice care for her family allowing both of her parents and dying siblings to spend their final days surrounded by loved ones in their own homes.

Julie loved to travel. She visited the Holy Land, cruised across the Atlantic, sailed around Cape Horn, and traveled to Bermuda and the Caribbean Islands. She especially loved her vacations to Aruba with her sisters and niece. Julie loved reminiscing about her road trip down South enjoying the southern home cooking and her weekend getaways to Sunny Hill in the Catskills with family and friends.

Julie enjoyed reading, cooking as well as eating out in her spare time.  She loved her cat, Bean and was happy when her brother Joe adopted her when she had to leave her home that she loved in the Fenway.

For the past several years she had been a resident of Hebrew Senior Life, Roslindale.

Loving Sister of Barbara Day and her late husband John of Rockport, MA, Maurice P. Downey Jr. of North Andover, MA, Joseph J. Downey and his husband John Walsh of Dorchester, MA. the late Mary E. Brennan, Patricia J. Murphy,  Eleanor Downey, Frances T. Downey, Daniel F. Downey and Catherine E. Haley.  Cherished aunt to several nieces, nephews and several grand nieces and nephews.
