Philip L. McCarthy

Dr. Philip L. McCarthy, most recently of Hingham, MA and a long time resident of Milton, MA, passed away on July 8, 2017 at the age of 95.  The son of Dr. Francis P and Emily (Truesdell) McCarthy, Dr. McCarthy grew up in Milton. He graduated from the Boston College High School, the College of the Holy Cross, and Tufts Medical School.  He went on to complete his Dermatology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania, and served as a physician in the US Army during the Korean War.  He returned to the US where he met his future wife Sheila McCarthy, whom he married in 1953.  He had a long career of over 50 years in dermatology and oral medicine, practicing in Quincy, MA. Dr. McCarthy also taught at Tufts Dental School and Massachusetts General Hospital. With his particular love of the sea, Dr. McCarthy spent many summers in Mattapoisett, MA with family and friends.  He is survived by his wife Sheila and four children: Dr. Philip Jr. (Jane) of Williamsville, NY, Dr. Carol McCarthy (Dr. Stephen Hayes) of Falmouth ME, Patricia Sanders (Dr. James) of Pittsford NY, and Brendan McCarthy (Dr. Elise) of Milton, and twelve grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tufts Medical School or St. Mary of the Hills Church in Milton.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary of the Hills Church, Milton at 11 AM, Thursday July 13. Visitation will be held at the Dolan Funeral Home, 5 Canton Ave, MILTON VILLAGE  from 7 -9 PM on Wednesday, July 12  Friends and family are invited.  Interment to follow at Milton Cemetery.
