Geneva Hughes
Geneva Hughes was born on February 18,1948 in Shaw, Mississippi to parents, Willie Ross, Sr. and Alice Ross (Gant). She grew up as the youngest of five and at an early age accepted Christ at Mount Table Baptist Church. Geneva was educated through the Shaw School District. She excelled at academics and graduated in 1966 from McEvans High School as Valedictorian. Geneva went on to attend Alcorn University and graduated in 1969 with a B.A. in English. After graduating from Alcorn University, Geneva began her career at Benoit High School in Benoit, Mississippi, as an English teacher.
On December 26, 1970, she married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Isaac Hughes. She relocated to Boston, Massachusetts to be with Isaac. With God at the center of their marriage, they joined Morning Star Baptist Church in the 70’s under the leadership of Bishop John M. Borders, III. Geneva began working at various banks and devoted 17 years working at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, while raising two children. After retiring from the Federal Reserve Bank, she transitioned her career to her passion of educating the local youth of Boston.
To her friends and family, Geneva will always be remembered as a gentle woman with a loving spirit. She was dedicated to her family and worked relentlessly to ensure that her children took advantage of educational and recreational opportunities. She was an avid sports fan with deep loyalties to the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, and New England Patriots. She loved taking long walks on Wollaston Beach with her husband. Road trips and sightseeing were favorite pastimes.
Geneva departed this earth on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at the age of 68. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Ross; her father, Willie Ross, Sr.; and her siblings, Willie Ross, Jr., John Ross, and Jeanette Thomas (Ross). Geneva is survived by her husband, Isaac Hughes; her daughter, Tanya (John) Moorer; her son, Marcus (Jennifer) Hughes; her brother, Charlie Ross; and three grandchildren, John Moorer, III, Mia Moorer, and Isabel Hughes; as well as a host of relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service on Friday April 29, 2016 in the Morning Star Baptist Church at 11:00am.
