Sr. Mary Laura McDermott mfic, of Newton, a beloved member of the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception for 65 years, died at Saint Patrick’s Manor, Framingham, Wednesday December 9, 2015. She was the beloved daughter of the late Roger and Nora (Waldron) McDermott. Sister was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Duffy and Vera Brooke and her brother Thomas McDermott. She is survived by her brother Dermot McDermott and many nieces and nephews and her Missionary Franciscan Sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Chapel at Mount Alvernia Convent, 790 Centre Street, Newton, Monday December 14 at 10:00 AM. Visiting hours at the Chapel, Sunday 2-4 PM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. A lifelong educator, Sr. Mary Laura’s ministries included St. Clare High School, Roslindale, Italian Home for Children, Jamaica Plain, St. Mary of the Hills School, Milton and Mount Alvernia High School Newton. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sr. may be made to Franciscan Sisters Retirement Fund, 790 Centre Street, Newton, MA 02458.
