Joseph F. Dolan
Joseph F. Dolan, 88, of Dorchester, former longtime resident of Milton, died peacefully at his home following a brief illness, Thursday March 21, 2013. Beloved husband of the late Virginia (O’Toole) Dolan, devoted father of William Dolan and his wife Jill of Marshfield, Terry Dolan of Dorchester, Martha Dolan Cosgrove and her husband Brian of Milton, the late Kathy (Dolan) Newberry, Tom Dolan and his wife Maura of Westboro, and Joe Dolan, Jr. of Milton. He is survived by five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many loving nieces and nephews, and many friends. He attended Harvard College for one year, and was a proud graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1946. Following several years of active sea duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, he resigned his commission, and was recalled to active duty several years later during the Korean conflict. A successful insurance executive, he founded the Dolan Insurance Agency in Westboro. Active in civic and social causes, he served for many years as an elected Town Meeting member in Milton, and served as chair of the Town Insurance Committee. He volunteered for 25 years at Haley House, a Catholic Worker community caring for the hungry and the homeless in the South End, and served on its Board of Directors. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Milton Visiting Nurse Association. Joe loved spending time by the ocean, both as a young man in Hull and later with his own family summering for many years in Scituate. Devoted to his immediate and extended family, he took enormous pleasure in the successes, achievements and events of their lives. He was a loving father, who taught his children by example the virtues of honesty, hard work, patience, and the importance of a few good magic tricks. In the last several months he completed a task that he started 10 years ago, writing his story, and life lessons learned, for the benefit of his family and their families. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Gregory Church, 2223 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, Monday March 25 at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON, Sunday 3-7 PM. Interment Milton Cemetery. So glad my son was able to know him before he left us. So glad he wrote his story so my son can know him better. May he rest in peace.
We are so sorry for your loss. Our prayers are with the Dolan family. Paula & Everett
Tom, Joe and the rest of the Dolan clan,
I am so sorry and saddened to hear about the loss of your dad. I only knew him briefly from coming into 88 Wharf and Steel and Rye, but I enjoyed every moment. He always treated me to some laughs and sweet compliments. I consider myself lucky to have gotten to know him, even just a little. You’re in my thoughts and prayers. With love, Liz Joyce-Brandt ( the waitress at steel and rye)
Though the the moments I had chatting with your Father are few, they stand out in such a colorful and lively way that he seems immortal. To all of you, sincere hope that his legacy shines, giving you peace as you live in a new light. Francisco also feels very fortunate of having had met him and getting accounts of brilliant Navy adventures. From Chile, our prayers that Mr Dolan will enter in the realm of eternal peace together with Mrs Dolan and Kathy.
Saddened by the news, I didn’t know your Father, but if he’s anything like Joe Jr, he will have been a wonderful guy. Any military veteran deserves the respect of the community, rest well Sailor, my deepest sympathy to those left behind.
I am so sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. May you find peace in remembering his warm heart, fun stories, and jovial laugh that will live on in all of us. Rest easy “Trader Joe”…you will be missed greatly! Warm heartful hugs to you all!
To quote G.B.Shaw:
” I want to be thoroughly used up when I die.”
Line well said.
Live so very well lived ~
The thought of you, Mr. Dolan, will always bring a smile to my heart.

I’m so very sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. He was such a blessing to my mother and our family. My kids will be saddened just to know he is no longer on this earth, but I’m trying to be happy he has been reunited with his wife, his daughter Kathy, his brother and my Mom. I had planned a trip to see him in May, and I would like to connect with any of his daughters or sons if possible. My thoughts and prayers are with you all on this day and all future days. He will be missed greatly.
