My thoughts & prayers are with you at this difficult time. It has been a long time since I saw Tommy. The last time was when I was bringing a relative site seeing for her first time up in Kennebunkport. I was crossing the street, a pickup truck stopped & then I noticed it was Tommy driving. He got out & then we got talking, he invited my family & I up to his house. We did and sat around talking about old times. It will be a lasting memory. Peace, Brother . . .
The Joyce family’s collective heart is broken today. My brother, Thomas F. Joyce, Jr., passed away last Friday morning. The words courageous and graceful come to mind in describing how this uncompromisingly principled man faced his final days.
We will celebrate his life during a Mass at Saint Gregory’s in Dorchester this Wednesday at 11am. No fanfare. No speeches. Just like him, direct and to the point in honoring a life well-lived, albeit, way too short. Those 52 years were filled with the stuff that heroes are made of—a firefighter, past president of the firefighter’s union Local S-2 I.A.F.F., and dedicated educator who inspired many more heroes during his years teaching Fire Science in the classroom. He is the hero I am proud to call my brother.

I knew Tom for two years and he never ceased to amaze me with his grand impression. In Tom, I saw a man who witnessed the unthinkable, yet continually remained graceful and composed while accomplishing unbeatable heights for the sake of saving lives. He remained humbled by his experiences and was never too proud of all he had done. He displayed a strong sense of family and brotherhood between men who aren’t related by blood, but by a desire to do the right thing.
I am grateful that I had the chance to know Tom and he will forever remain in my heart.

My brother-in-law has been friends with Tom for many, many years and will miss him terribly. In 2008, Tom joined us for Thanksgiving dinner and we talked about some fun times that he had on the Cape; we also ended up knowing a few of the same people!
I wish him peace and comfort and my sympathies to his family.
