Jose Miguel Rodrigues

Jose Miguel Rodrigues “Dje Dje De Ana”, of Milton February 3, 2015, was born in Fogo of the Cape Verde Islands in 1924 to Ana and Benjamin Rodrigues. He was their eldest child, and later, helped his mother raise his younger siblings while his father was in the United States of America.

On the Cape Verde Islands, he worked as a supervisor of various governmental road construction projects as well as a supervisor to few family agricultural properties. For a short period of time, he was also a land surveyor in Fogo, Cape Verde.
His father, Benjamin Rodrigues,  a US Veteran of WWI, became a United States citizen in 1926, which meant that while his brothers and sisters became automatic United States citizens, he was not afforded such a privilege, as he had been born in 1924.
In 1959, with the change in immigration laws, his youngest brother, the late Antonio Rodrigues, was able to petition for his immigration finally in 1966. He and his eldest son, Manuel Rodrigues, came to the United States and lived with his mother and brothers until his wife Catarina arrived in Boston in 1967.
Jose worked at several jobs during this time to provide for his family. He worked in a garment factory in Dedham Massachusetts as well as a papermill company in Hyde Park. During the weekends, he would work with his late brother, Peter Rodrigues, in the town of Scituate doing landscaping.
He lived in Dorchester, Massachusetts with Catarina and children, and in 1974, had a severe auto accident, and remained disabled for several years. This was a very difficult time for him because he was not able to provide for his family. Many years later, he was co-partnered with GG Goncalves Wholesale Produce, and later, he founded Rodrigues Wholesale Produce in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He later moved to Milton, Massachusetts in 1987, where he resided until his passing.

Jose was beloved husband of Catarina Barbosa (Centeio) Rodrigues. Father of Manuel Cruz Rodrigues, Miguel B. Rodrigues, Joao Felipe Lopes, Vitalino Alves Rodrigues, Jose Santos Alves, Henrique Gomes, Maria Mendes Pina, Filomena Rosa Gomes, Dr. Maria Ana Rodrigues, Maria Estela Rodrigues and the late Maria Jose Rodrigues. Brother of Mary, Hilda, Hugo, Pedro and Antonio. Grandfather of 30 and great-grandfather of 17.
