Rita G. (Callanan) O’Connor
Rita G. (Callanan) O’Connor, of Milton, died at Milton Hospital on Sunday, August 7, 2011 after a period of failing health.
Born in Boston, she was a graduate of Jeremiah Burke High School and Bryant & Stratton Business School. Rita worked for the Internal Revenue Service for four years until her marriage to John J. O’Connor, Jr. in 1944. Mrs. O’Connor worked as a clerk for the Public Works Department in the Town of Milton from 1969 – 1970.
She was active with many organizations in Milton, including the Milton Council of Aging, Milton Senior Citizens, Catholic Daughters of America in Milton, Cunningham Bowling League and was the first president of the Saint Agatha Bowling League. A resident of Milton for over 34 years, she moved to Leisurewoods in Rockland for 9 years before returning to Milton in 2001.
Beloved wife of the late John J. O’Connor, Jr. Daughter of the late Eugene J. and Mary G. (Delahanty) Callanan. Devoted mother of Patricia M. and her husband Richard Guerriero of South Weymouth, John J. and his wife Dorothy O’Connor of Scituate, Kevin F. and his wife Bettyann O’Connor of Hull, Brian R. and his wife Johanna O’Connor of Marblehead and Kathleen F. and her husband David F. Murphy of Reading. Rita is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her turtle Clyde.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Agatha Church, Adams Street at Brook Road, Milton, Thursday August 11 at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, MILTON, Wednesday 4-8 PM.
Donations in Rita’s memory may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St, Boston, MA 02215.

Hi Kate, So sorry to hear about your Mom. She had a long and happy life and I’m sure all the memories of times you shared with her will help you through this time. One more angel in heaven!! what a gentle soul Mrs O’Connor ,though our paths only crossed for a short period of time, it was enough to leave a lasting impression on me. I will carry with me your wise words that It is not What you are but Who you are that is important.The hours of fun and laughter will be with me always.Rest in peace and my condolenses to the entire family you loved and talked about with pride and joy.
