Mary “Fitzie” (Fitzgerald) Finneran

Mary “Fitzie” (Fitzgerald) Finneran, a longtime resident of Dorchester, died at Marina Bay Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Saturday March 19, 2011. She was 90 years old. Born in Boston and raised in South Boston, she was a graduate of Nazareth High School (1938) and Emmanuel College (1942) with degrees in chemistry and math. Mary was a civilian employee for the United States Army during World War II. Mrs. Finneran raised her family in South Boston and Dorchester. She was a teacher’s aide for the City of Boston Public Schools for many years. An active participant in local civic and political events, she was an avid swimmer at the beaches in Dorchester. Mrs. Finneran enjoyed attending the horse races at Saratoga, NY and was a contestant on the trivia game show Jeopardy during the first year of production. Beloved mother of William Finneran and Mary L. Finneran, both of Dorchester, Robert Finneran of Charlestown, Thomas and his wife Donna Finneran of Mattapan, Lawrence Finneran of Saratoga Springs, NY, Paul Finneran and Katherine and her husband Gary Barkowski, all of Dorchester. Mother-in-law of Linda Finneran. Loving Nana of Matthew and Michael Pritchard, Christopher, Mary E. and Michael Finneran, Suzanne Bridges, Alexis Tkachuk, Kelley McNeil, Shannon Mahoney, Samantha, Luke, John, Laura and Joseph Barkowski and 13 great-grandchildren. Sister of Frances Duggan, Eleanor Doyle, William Fitzgerald and the late Edward Fitzgerald, Terese O’Neil, Joseph Fitzgerald, Gerard Fitzgerald and Louise McCormick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Gregory Church, 2215 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, Thursday March 24 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours at Dolan Funeral Home, 1140 Washington Street, DORCHESTER LOWER MILLS, Wednesday 3-8 PM. Interment private.
